About this deal

Marcus Rashford campaigned for the government to provide free school meals. He also campaigns against racism and homelessness. This could be used as a starting point to look how the lives of others have been improved by the caring actions of a particular person. LAURA: Of course, the eyebrows. They give expression. Oh, and I see what you've done there. You've done it like Marcus' eyebrow. Thank you so much. If you've drawn Marcus Rashford then send it in because we want to have a look. Thank you, Marta and Alex, for joining us in Book Club! LAURA: Ah, Mr Inkblot's. I was gonna say, does it like, did the character in that inspire you to start drawing? 'Cause it sounds like an illustrator genius behind it. LAURA: Alishea, I know you love to present Book Club when Rhys isn't here. But I promise you I will not present Book Club while you and Rhys aren't here. Oh, sorry, Alishea, kkkk, kkkk, you're breaking up, kkkk, I can't hear you, kkkk, kk.

ALEX: So the first thing I think about is what do I want the setting to do in- as part of the story? Um, how do I want this place to feel? Um, how do I want the audience to feel about it? And then when you can go from there, when you know what you want, um, you-, how you want the place to feel, then you- you go through your senses. Think about your smell, um, the things you can hear, the things you can see. And then just really go through there, and, um, and using that you can really craft a- a setting. Marcus has lost his precious football, given to him by his much adored older cousin, who has gone to play footy in the US on scholarship. ALEX: Well, um, this is the type of thing where we kind of do-, it's all a real team effort. So we have loads of book designers who, um, look really hard at the text and think about what are the type of things which, um, are words that can catch the audience's eye. Um, and they kind of help, er, put that all together.

About Marcus Rashford, Alex Falase-Koya

MARTA: Little circles for the- for the pupils. We can add a little bit more definition on the top of the eye for, well, a bit of, er, lashes.

The kids find themselves chasing an unidentified, rather scary, creature whilst also trying to keep their activities secret from the eagle eyed teachers at school. In response to Marcus's End Child Food Poverty campaign, the British Government committed GBP400 million to support vulnerable children across the UK, supporting 1.7 million children for the next 12 months. Alex Falase-Koya is a London native. He has been both reading and writing since he was a teenager; anything at the cross-section of social commentary and genre fiction floats his boat. He was a winner of Spread the Word's 2019 London Writers Awards for YA/children's. He now lives in Walthamstow with his girlfriend and two cats. He is the cowriter of Marcus Rashford's debut children's fiction title The Breakfast Club Adventures. LAURA: Ok, so, I've got some fictional crimes and I need you to tell me who the literary culprit of these crimes are. Breakfast Club guaranteed I had the best possible start to my day and welcomed me with open arms. It wasn't just about food. It was about forming friendships, about togetherness, about escape. It was where some of my greatest memories were made. I want to capture thatALEX: There was once a detective called Magnifying Glass. And Magnifying Glass, um, was, he really wanted to find a magical butterfly. LAURA: Oh, no, you got it wrong. buzzer It's LLUGAESZ, apparently there's a silent Z at the beginning that no one knows about.

MusicalPuppy123 says, did anyone you know inspire the personality of Alex Rider and they are my favourite series. LAURA: Yeah. OK, Alex, another one for you. Do you have any tips for writing setting descriptions? How do you set the scene? In October 2020, he was appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Marcus has committed himself to combating child poverty in the UK and his book You Are a Champion, written with Carl Anka, is an inspiring guide for children about reaching their full potential. Marcus's first fiction title, The Breakfast Club Adventures, written with Alex Falase-Koya, published in May 2022. Welcome to Book Club with me, Laura! Let's see what's coming up today. Will I get pooed on by a seagull? Author of "Where Seagulls Dare" and Alex Rider series, Anthony Horowitz, will be the one to decide.Ask the children to find out about the football career of Marcus Rashford and write a short biography about him. ALEX: That's the thing. I don't remember. He has a dog or something? I can't remember the name of the dog. ANTHONY HOROWITZ: Ooh, tennis player. Oh, tennis is about to start. I'm, I'm, I'm gonna go for "War Horse", Michael Morpurgo, wonderful character, horses are fantastic. But they're not much good at tennis. ALEX: Mm-hmm, yeah. The thing that I always think about is, um, for getting my main character, um, to think about what are the things that they want and to um-, and to kind of show them trying to get that. Um, when you have a main character and you have a thing that they want, you immediately have, I think, a little bit of tension, which I think can really add to the mystery, um, and to the suspense of a chapter.

ANTHONY HOROWITZ: Oh, Laura, you're in trouble. You are in trouble, Laura, I'm not great at quizzes. The Breakfast Club Investigators haven't managed to solve a mystery in months and Marcus is worried that the group is going to break up! So when the captain of the school basketball team comes to ask for their help Marcus knows this might just be the Investigator's last chance to prove themselves.

Creative Play

ANTHONY HOROWITZ: Well, he's in some books and in films, I'm gonna go for Darth Vader. Because, you know, Star Wars. Because if he was, well, he is an astronaut in a way, but if he was up in space, he'd destroy us all. He'd blow us all up. So I'm gonna go for him. Investigate how people are awarded honours and research children’s authors who have received an honour and the reason they were given it. The children could also look into the history of the honours system. LAURA: Yeah, Fantastic Mr Fox is a good character. I actually dressed up as Fantastic Mr Fox for our World Book Day here. ALEX: Um, yeah, that was a very, it was actually a very scary book for me as a kid, growing up. But, um, also something that was just really captured my imagination. I really liked thinking about oh, what if the witch is just around the corner?
