Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches / Had bellies with stars. / The Plain-Belly Sneetches / Had none upon thars." This collection of four of Dr. Seuss's most winning stories begins with that unforgettable tale of the unfortunate Sneetches, bamboozled by one Sylvester McMonkey McBean ("the Fix-it-up Chappie"), who teaches them that pointless prejudice can be costly.Canon Foreigner: McBean, believe it or not! In the Redbook version of The Sneetches mentioned above, he is completely absent. In May of 1954, Life published a report concerning illiteracy among school children. The report said, among other things, that children were having trouble to read because their books were boring. This inspired Geisel's publisher, and prompted him to send Geisel a list of 400 words he felt were important, asked him to cut the list to 250 words (the publishers idea of how many words at one time a first grader could absorb), and write a book. Nine months later, Geisel, using 220 of the words given to him published The Cat in the Hat, which went on to instant success.

In The Sneetches the plain bellied Sneetches find a means to gain stars on their bellies like their elitist kin, but the original star bellies still want to be top of the hierarchy, leading them to proclaim plain bellies to be top of the chain and take their's off. The two sides begin rapidly taking their stars on and off, eventually so insistent on outdoing the other's social gaining that they don't even remember who had stars in the first place. It's only after they've lost every last penny they had with the process that they realise how stupid the war is. There are standouts in the body of Seuss’s work – and the Grinch is one of our favorites. The animation we love best is Halloween is Grinch Night featuring (besides Himself, The Grinch) the beloved Max, and Euchariah Who, who along with his grandparents Josiah and Mariah, and his sibs Obediah and Mathiah, deal with the effects of the Sour-Sweet wind. . .oh those gree-grumps and hakken-krakks. . . .I wish that had been in a book (not just a show), and I'm looking for the sheet music. . .(any help welcomed!)The first two stories in the book ("The Sneetches" and "The Zax") were later adapted, along with Green Eggs and Ham, into 1973's animated TV musical special Dr. Seuss on the Loose: The Sneetches, The Zax, Green Eggs and Ham with Hans Conried voicing the narrator and both Zax, and Paul Winchell and Bob Holt voicing the Sneetches and Sylvester McMonkey McBean respectively. May contain a number of explicitly descriptive love scenes. Our take: Not recommended for under 18 or sensitive readers. The Sneetches”: The Star-Belly Sneetches and the Plain-Belly Sneetches learn to overcome their differences.
