About this deal

Blade Champion • Hetaeron Guard • Aquilon Terminator • Ephoroi • Allarus Custodian • Custodian Warden • Vexilus Praetor • Apothecary During the battle for the Imperial Palace, the Sisters of Silence dropship arrives just as the Custodians are starting to be overwhelmed by daemons. Constantin Valdor — First Captain-General of the Custodian Guard. [4] Served during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. [2]

The hotter the forge, the finer the blade, or so they say. The forge of war in which we now find ourselves blazes hotter than anything the Imperium has seen in ten millennia. We of the Adeptus Custodes were built to endure these fires. They will not be our end. Instead, we will be honed to the finest cutting edge, that we may be the bane of even the foulest heretics." Building an Adeptus Custodes army means building a tough force that will look almost comically tiny on the battlefield – but you need to remember: each of your models is a hero. A relatively recent addition to Warhammer 40,000, the Adeptus Custodes have deepened the lore of the Imperium, while adding a clearly defined, super-elite infantry army to the tabletop game’s faction mix. As an Adeptus Custodes player, you’ll never be able to field a huge army; instead, you’ll usually have just a few models – but each and every one of them is an army unto itself. Models with this rule have a 5+ invulnerable save, and a 6+ Feel No Pain against mortal wounds in the Psychic phase. A simple but effective rule. The Emperor’s Chosen Batman Gambit: In The Regent's Shadow, Trajann Valoris deliberately acts the part of the weak, neutral player in Terran politics to goad Imperium Eterna into showing their faces in the open; then sends Valerian to arrest Aleya, knowing that the Shield-Captain will assist her instead and thus will be in position to fight the Minotaurs and rescue Fadix.Misericordia - The Misericordia ( High Gothic: "blade of mercy") is a long dagger or short sword that was carried by the Custodians of first the Legio Custodes and after the Horus Heresy, the Adeptus Custodes. The blade was symbolic, intended to represent that the Custodes were beneficiaries of the Magisterium Lex Ultima which placed them above the reach of all Imperial Law save for the commandments of the Emperor of Mankind Himself. The Misericordia was designed to deliver a single, mortal blow, and despite their symbolic nature, were sometimes used by individual Custodians to carry out a death sentence or offer the Emperor's Peace to a mortally wounded and grievously suffering warrior. When setting objective markers up on the battlefield, place them so they are centred on the point specified by the mission. When measuring distances to and from objective markers, measure to and from the closest part of them. Models can move over objective markers as if they were not there, but they cannot end a move on top of an objective marker. With the release of War of the Spider, though, they got one of the most extensive Psychic Awakening updates in the game, gaining a whole host of new options. That book arrived at a difficult time, with 8th on its deathbed and much of the world in the grip of covid-19, but the obvious potential was there. Custodes are an elite army, so the Custodian Guard are your infantry (at least what’s available in this box), and with only 5 of them, use them wisely – otherwise you may be overwhelmed very easy by horde armies. I once played a game as Death Guard against Custodes, and my opponent found himself overwhelmed by Poxwalkers, Deathshroud Terminators and Bloat Drones – but that’s the cost of fielding an elite army against a conventional one. The Custodian Guard can be built with one as a Shield Captain and one as a Vexilus Praetor – the guy with the flag. Both options offer more power to the unit, but are expensive upgrades at 105 points each so may not be worth it in a Boarding Actions list.

Using this box’s contents alone, you’d have to make the hard choice of subtracting models – you could individually take away a Custodian Guard or Allarus Custodian, but were it me, I would take out the Captain-General Trajann Valoris. While he is a very powerful HQ unit, he eats points like a Tyranid hive fleet, and by taking him out, you have 95 points left over to spend. Naturally, this would mean having to buy an extra unit of something to make a battle-ready list, which is not ideal. To make a legal list, I would subtract the good Captain-General and sub in a squad of Sisters of Silence to have some infantry to even things out, leaving the heavy hitting to the already busting Custodes. If every unit from your army has the ADEPTUS CUSTODES keyword (excluding ANATHEMA PSYKANA, AGENT OF THE IMPERIUM and UNALIGNED units), and every unit that is assigned to a shield host is assigned to the same shield host, this unit can use this ability and the following rules apply.Great Offscreen War: While the story is largely a political drama, there are no less than four different conflicts mentioned as happening offscreen. Even Logan Grimnar, the Wolford to wolf them all rides in a anti-grav viking ship pulled by wolves! Put on a Bus: Lev Tieron retires at the end of the first book, passing his job - and his point-of-view slot - to his assistant, Jek.

First, let me just say how annoying it is to only get a weak little teaser about Valdor. If you don’t know who that is, it is the Emperor’s first Captain-General and one of his oldest and closet advisors. Outside of the Primarchs and Malcador the Sigillite, no one knew the Emperor as well as Valdor. All we get is some line about how he disappeared during the Heresy and no one knows what happened. The lore is awesome. The Captain-General is a High Lord of Terra, for those unfamiliar, they are the governing council that rules the Imperium of Man in the Emperor’s name. Additionally, the Captain-General is the highest ranking military officer in the Segmentum Solar. The duties of this office are far beyond merely commanding the Legio Custodes and the guarding the Golden Throne. It is a heavy burden, one that can only be undertaken by the greatest of those who have been chosen to serve as the guardians of mankind’s future… You must complete all your Endeavours within nine games of claiming Magisterium Lex Ultima. If you fail, you will be forced to select a Dishonour, the Custodes equivalent of being told your eyes are too big for your tummy. One example is Petition the Tower of Hegemon. When Aleya and her ship are trying to reach Terra through the Warp, they're rescued by Navradaran's ship, which has been assembling the Sisters of Silence. Trajann Valoris is the current Chief Custodian and 17th Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes, the elite bodyguard of the Emperor of Mankind, and perhaps the deadliest individual warrior in the entire Imperium.

Stratagems

The other main thing that makes Adeptus Custodes armies shine (other than their highly polished auramite plate) is that they have incredibly strong basic statlines, with each of your models more or less equivalent to a character in another army. This doubles for your characters; if you thought your other units were powerful, wait until you meet your HQs. Surprisingly high skill floor – your units are great but there aren’t many of them, and getting the most out of the army takes some thought Wisdom of the Ancients – 1CP: Use at the start of any phase. Select an ADEPTUS CUSTODES DREADNOUGHT; until the end of the phase you can re-roll hit rolls of 1 for friendly ADEPTUS CUSTODES units within 6″. Independent re-rolls for your Dreadnoughts are a fine thing to exist, especially in an army full of BS2+ units. B

Refused by the Call: When the leader of the Companions (the Custodians who watch over the Emperor directly) has prophetic dreams featuring Valerian's name, they both assume that this is The Call for Valerian to join the Companions - only for him to be unable to cross the treshold into the throne room. It's implied that the Emperor deliberately pushed him away so that Valerian would go to Vorlese. So if you’re looking to start Custodes without any gaming context – be aware that 9 models will be make over 500 points, which we’ll discuss below in the points section. Boarding Patrol: Adeptus Custodes – Value The codex also brought the Sisters of Silence – anti-psykers extraordinaire, and historic allies of the Custodes in the so-called ‘Talons of the Emperor – into the Adeptus Custodes codex for the first time, with rules to fight alongside the boys in gold.

HQ

Following this dire campaign, the High Lords voted to suspend the dictates of the Lex Imperialis, which allowed the Adeptus Custodes to sally forth from the Throneworld, to take part in Guilliman's subsequent Indomitus Crusade, and to take the fight directly to the servants of the Ruinous Powers. Just Toying with Them: Discussed in The Regent's Shadow: as Valerian fights his first Primaris Space Marine, he notes that he really wishes he could toy with the newcomer for a while to figure out his capabilities, but alas, circumstances mean he must go all out and Curb Stomp him. Enemy Civil War: In The Regent's Shadow, the Splintered and the Imperium Eterna come to blows, as the latter were using the former to set themselves up to become a Villain with Good Publicity.
