About this deal

Deeply Rooted In Scandinavian History, The Seax, AKA “Scramasax” Or “Sax,” Was The Blade Shape Of Choice For The Much-Feared And Revered Vikings. Knives make up the greater part of our smithy’s production, but we also make Viking long knives with bone handles (called Seax or scramasax). These knives were so important to the Germanic peoples in the period of migration that they actually lent their name to the Saxon peoples and, by extension, some of the lands they once ruled over (Essex, Wessex, Middlesex…).

Discover our medieval daggers and knives. Handmade daggers from top brands like Windlass, Deepeeka, Cold Steel. Our sharp daggers are based on real medieval knight daggers. Our blunt daggers are made for reenactment combat and martial arts. They are functional and often come with a leather sheath. These daggers are suitable for wearing to medieval fairs and festivals.Smaller beard axes such as this Danish hand axe had evolved from Francisca and served the Huscarls primarily as devastating throwing axes, but were also used in close combat. A distinctive feature is the relatively long blade cutting, which tapers sharply towards the shaft. The blade encloses the shaft made of wood and is riveted to it. The shaft is largely straight but is widened at the lower end towards the blade, which improves the handling discreetly. Discover our assortment of Viking knives. Replicas of knives have been found in cities such as Dublin, Birka and Haithabu. Knives that the Vikings used in everyday life. Our knives are handmade of high quality. The knife grips are often made of bone, brass and wood. Hand forged from EN9 (1050) that are the offcuts from my bladesmithing classes and axe making . The blades are differentially hardened and around 2 3/4 inches long and the handles are forged to a curve to fit the hand. These knives are left with a polished forged finish.

It’s sharpened to a 34-degree edge except for the two inches closest to the hilt. That small section is sharpened to a finer 25-degree edge for more meticulous, precise knifework. I have made a small batch of these knives so the knife you receive may differ slightly from the ones pictured. The sax, seax, saxmes, seaxe or scramasax was an early medieval stab and melee weapon used by the Vikings and the Germanic tribes such as the Alamans and Langobards. The Vikings used their seaxes in battle. Our saxes are both Germanic and Viking replicas. We have seaxes of different steel qualities and with different steel hardnesses. Some of our seaxes are made of damascus steel. This means that they consist of several folded layers to create a strong and artistic blade. Typically the Norsemen were associated with their famous axes, but, truth be known, they also carried a knife that saw more general use: the seax. Emerson said the seax also could be employed as a self-defense weapon if needed. It was truly a blade for all seasons: Harvest produce in the morning, fend off the enemy after lunch, and then prepare supper in the evening—all with the same blade. Seax Designs

These blades are forged from twisted bars of 15N20 and 1080 steel, offcuts from forging patternwelded swords and seaxes. Their personal knife was called the seax and it never left their side because it was their version of an EDC,” begins Ernest Emerson of Emerson Knives, Inc. “The knife was tasked with a myriad of chores, from skinning a freshly taken deer to cutting up the turnips they grubbed out of the ground with the same knife.” The folding Emerson Knives Seax puts a modern twist on this age-old blade design. (Image via Emerson Knives) This amazing seax is from the husband & wife duo of Nathaniel and Megan Everett at Lunar Light Forge in Akron, Ohio. The damascus blade is made from 42 layers of 1095 and 15n20 steel around a 5160 core. I forge these blades from the offcuts of my hand forged swords so in some sense, although they are a small knife they are the sons and daughters of my swords SZCO Supplies has made a fun, durable knife with its Brass-Studded Seax. This is "Ragnar's" Ragweed Forge because he was known as Ragnar of Elandris in the Society for Creative Anachronism. The SCA is a worldwide group of people with an interest in early history. We live in the Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, otherwise known as Western New York. The Hael is part of the autonomous Kingdom of AEthelmearc, formerly part of the East Kingdom.

The Scandinavians usually lived in villages, farmed the land and raised animals. In such an agrarian society, they also needed tools to help them work the land and harvest the fruits of their labor. This is also where a knife came into play. The long history of the seax is still going strong today as companies young and old are making new versions of the historic blade. These five are some of the more unique and exciting seax knives available today.
