About this deal

The heavy Amber plays a big role here and combines excellently with the slightly chocolate-spotted benzoin - a classic mixture with which you can't do much wrong in principle, because it's cuddly and round. Smelling Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan for the first time is a whole other perfume experience. Initially released in 1993, and becoming widely available in 2000, the perfumer Christopher Sheldrake set a new standard for how should amber fragrances smell.

This aromatic greenness is accompanied by a set of supporting notes of myrtle, coriander, and angelica root which act more of a supporting role that blends into other aromatic qualities of this scent, rather than taking the front role. I enter an area of sensory-impressive luxury in the scent of spices, precious balsamic oils, smoky resins and embracing warmth. Inspired by scented wax found in a souk and long forgotten in a wooden box, the amber note has been given a sultanesque quality and re-worked with fragrant Cistus herb. The intoxicating deep balsamic and spiced qualities of the fragrance exude from notes of Patchouli, Benzoin and Labdanum. An unexpected overtone of Vanilla helps to soften the fragrance with warm and creamy notes.Separated from the first weeks of his mother, his personality will be marked from then on by the feeling of an original abandonment. Constantly torn between two families, he lives at a distance and invents himself. He’s a dreamer. At the Montesquieu school, he is said to be “in the moon”: he does not follow, even if his teachers recognize him as a storyteller. Ambre Sultan is a very perfumey, very herbal amber. It's a touch honeyed and more than a touch doughy, with its sweetness balanced by the medicinal tones of bay leaf (which is almost overdosed here, giving Ambre Sultan its "signature") and oregano. If the combination of bay leaf and oregano does not sound appealing to you, then stay away from this one. a significant date for Serge Lutens who meets Morocco that year.A revelation! Taken in the crowd and the scents of the old town of Marrakech, Serge discovers by chance during one of his wanderings in the souks, an amber wax. More complex, but just as wearable and perhaps my favorite amber, is Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. With a spicy opening of nutmeg, warm sandalwood soon follows with the addition of patchouli and vetiver. Although the fragrance isn’t sweet, I do get some floral rose and geranium in the drydown. It is so well blended and balanced, the varied notes swirl around you like the first warm breeze in spring after a hard winter.

Contrary to that, I believe that almost everything from the brand’s selection provides something for everyone, and is usually considered a benchmark fragrance house. I must say, he did not take my breath away, as Bois D´ascèse did before him, for example, but he overwhelmed me in his gentleness and coherence in a different way. OK - you can wear it and I like it quite a lot, even if I would have preferred to do without the dry dustiness. But that's exactly what makes the character of Ambre Sultan so special, that he doesn't predictably exude his aura, but gets some rough edges. In the early '90s, inspired by his time spent in Morocco, Lutens started to create perfumes, eventually launching them under his own brand in 2000. Made in France but inspired by the rich aromas of Morocco, the fragrances marry a blueprint of iconic French chicness and the luxurious notes associated with North Africa. And trust me when I say all Serge Lutens perfumes are wearable, beautiful and unique. Oh, and it's not just me who thinks it. In fact, Kate Moss once shared her love for the brand's cult Fleurs d'Oranger perfume in an interview with Evening Standard.

He actually starts out the way he's supposed to stay... sort of straight to the drydown. Nothing that has to sort itself out, no disharmonies, bursting peaks, fluctuations or tarnishing, and all this without being boring. Fast forward about seven years later, and the art of perfume making caught my attention after purchasing a few bottles of essential oil to diffuse. I continued pretty consistently but have never taken to another level, due to fear and anxiety of the sheer dedication and amount of money that must be invested to start a fragrance line and a small business in general (I am feeling more and more confident as of late, stay tuned). This has led, however, to much deeper appreciation for fragrance and scent, studying hundreds of natural materials and aromachems, learning from mentors in the fragrance community, collecting and educating myself through fragrance composition books, studying the history of perfume, and then came 2020. The resins (Benzoe and Labdanum belong to my favorites meanwhile) provide the slightly sweetish depth and spices (Here Koreander and Oregano, which clearly perceptibly weave through the course) lift it up again and make sure that the scent does not sink one-dimensionally hard, as it is unfortunately often the case with many less thoughtfully composed Orientals. The well-known story of Serge Lutens finding a wooden box containing amber wax in Marrakech starts to unfold here. The only mentioned woody note in the fragrance is sandalwood, but it ain’t that.

I’m being modest when I say that it lasts around 8 – 10 hours with moderate projection since it depends on where you wear it and on which occasions. During a spontaneously warm amber reception, we are served from a mysterious elongated bottle of fragrance. Welcome. Something Bruneian? With the irritating fertility of tropical nights Yes, the vanilla is dry and powdery and doesn’t go into the typical sweet oriental base as many other amber scents do. The perfume opens us very green, woody, and boozy. Straight away, there is no denying that the green aroma is coming from the combination of herbal notes of oregano, and Bay leaf.I just hope that the brand will eventually do what Mancera did, and move away from these kinds of atomizers in the near future. My Experience With Perfume Living in a Mediterranean country and being surrounded by those aromatic herbs which are often used in meals in this part of the world reminded me of the Dalmatian coast but without the signature pine tree scents which also grow there. A perfume line created by Serge Lutens in his own image. Minimalist, straight lined, angular and uncompromising, each of these bottles with their refined style reflects the exacting nature and character of their creator. A sobriety which enhances the richness and sumptuousness of the perfumes, whose scents and colours are as numerous and as nuanced as precious stones and our personalities. What an incredibly balanced composition has the dear Solstice bottled for me for Christmas: thank you for that!

Here, too, is rather resorted to a slightly matte gold variant; so much more appropriate, as bright glow and radiance. As if I were in a "compartment of fragrances", in which I can stay for several hours and feel good.Ambre Sultan will never not smell glorious to me, though. The love child of a Christmas tree and a lump of cassonade, it smells like a golden resin melting down on your skin on a hot day, then hardening again like a layer of shellac. It is light and dark all at once, its breathy presence one of dusty books, sunlit herbs, burnt incense, and polished wood. We crossed Borneo, Kalimantan and Saravak and went to visit Brunei. With the sultan. Perhaps the richest man in the world What are your thoughts about Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan ? Have you tried it? Do you like it?Let’s start a conversation and let me know in the comment section below. Ambers are crowd pleasers, the Golden Retrievers of the perfume world, ready to encompass you with a warm, furry greeting and a wag of the metaphorical tail. Granted, some are easier to love than others, and there is always someone who would rather not, but generally speaking the amber aims to please. Here are some of my favorites. A "green" amber, which has a fragrance that is very different from cuddly, warm, soft scents. But sandalwood, delicate honey, labdanum and vanilla flatter together to create a long-lasting fragrance. To individual beastliness.
