About this deal

At the beginning of the game, choose a starting player (we suggest whoever sets up the map), and give a set of playing pieces to each player. Whether you're using the app or the clue books, the map will be constructed the same way. The numbers in the From Bigfoot and the Yeti to El Chupacabra and the Loch Ness Monster, rumours of strange, undiscovered creatures are some of our most enduring modern-day myths. This game from first-time designers Hal Duncan and Ruth Veveers casts players as monster hunters on the trail of one of these weird beasts – and to find it before your rivals you’ll need powers of logic, deduction and just a hint of sneaky misdirection. Over time and with some careful observation, you’ll be able to hazard a guess at the information they might hold, and hone your own search accordingly. That also introduces the possibility of misleading your opponents, asking questions about terrain you already know can’t possibly be the correct type; a stone-cold poker face can be a considerable advantage.

Firstly, yes, it’s a much smaller game. There’s no board at all, just cards and some marker tokens. Secondly, this puppy is two-player only. The original game was for three to five players (although there’s a decent official two-player variant too, Cryptid fans), so you can tell right from the get-go that this is a very different beast cryptid. The thing I want to touch on first, is that Urban Legends isn’t a deduction game. There are several possible clue types, but they all relate to distance from certain elements on the board. Some clues specify that the habitat must be on a type of terrain, while others specify that the habitat is within a certain number of spaces of a type of terrain, structure, or animal territory. For example, you might have placed a disc on a space where you should have placed a cube. As soon as you realize your mistake, you should tell the other players, place a cube on the space, and move the disc to a different space which could be the habitat according to your clue. Remember that you cannot place any pieces on a space which already has one of your pieces, or any player's cube on it. GETTING A HINT Cryptid is a unique deduction game of honest misdirection in which players must try to uncover information about their opponent's clues while throwing them off the scent of their own. Each player holds one piece of evidence to help them find the creature, and on their turn they can try to gain more information from their opponents. Be warned; give too much away and your opponents might beat you to the mysterious animal and claim the glory for themselves!

Crytpid isn't out yet, but nevertheless, it sits on the table, a cryptic puzzle: at once real and unreal. Of course, it draws players like a honeypot. If the space works for both of your clues, you need to place discs from both colors on the spot. However, if the space does work for one of your clues but not the other, you’ll place the cube on the space and will NOT place the disc. When a space does not work for either of your clues, then you get to choose which cube to place on the space, not both.

It takes several games of Cryptid to get used to the way it looks, and that can be off-putting to players who are already on the fence about a game this analytical. The terrain tiles, by necessity, feature a wide array of colors and textures as they need to easily represent differing types of topography such as water, deserts, forests, mountains, and swamps. That much is forgivable, because there’s really no way to make 5 tile-types look distinct and still mesh. It’s the minutia of the game that make an already challenging premise doubly so. If nobody places a cube, then congratulations! You have identified the habitat of the creature and are the winner of the game! This makes you paranoid and makes each player more likely to search before they are ready to. In a four-player game it doesn’t take long to imagine the game will be over before you have another go. This makes you want to jump the gun on Searching. A failed Search is a godsend for the other players, as it reveals a lot of information at once. By trying to prevent the game ending before your next turn you will cause the game to end before your next turn. Cryptid: Urban Legends’ biggest problem is its name. A lot of people are going to see the name in online stores, think “Oh boy, more Cryptid!”, and feel a sense of disappointment. That’s a result of the original game being so good, and this new upstart being so fundamentally different to its parent. While Urban Legends isn’t a deduction game, what it is, is a fantastic two-player duel, which really rewards time invested in it.For example, if one of my cubes is on a mountain space already, I might place another one of my cubes on a different mountain space to make the other players think that my clue is 'the habitat is not in the mountains'.
