About this deal

The DBX 286S mostly finds use as a microphone preamp, especially if we’re talking about condenser mics and vocal recording. It’s also used for instruments, but definitely not as often as vocals. Make sure the equipment isn't going into the red section on the metre - Keep your eyes on those metres at all times.

The meter then shows you the true peak gain reduction in decibels. If the Red LED at the far left lights up, no further gain reduction is available. De-Esser On the other hand, the Behringer MIC2200 is totally comparable to DBX’s 286S. What’s more, we would argue that it’s a worthy opponent.the gate is the only thing I have no complaints about. If the unit didn't have such bad / unmusical distortion then it would useful.

The sonically pristine dbx 286s Mic Preamp has all the features you need, including wide-ranging input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power, and an 80Hz high-pass filter to remove low frequency hum, rumble or wind. However, when using the mono cable, you’re not supposed to plug it all the way in. Otherwise, you’ll just stop the signal from going to the main output. It’s a bit of a hassle, but you can still use this output for this purpose as well.

Within the preamp section, there are several controls. First, is the input gain knob that goes from 0 to +60 decibels, and from -15 to +45 decibels for the line input. Right next to it, there’s a small LED clipping indicator. Nothing too fancy, but gets the job done, alerting you about any potential problems at the input section. I'm sure some 'expert' could tell you that the pre-amp used here isn't as good as ______ because of _______, but whatever! Here is the deal, modern interfaces like the RME Babyface or Audient ID22 have mic preamps that are lightyears ahead of this unit. Then OK you have the gate (which worked well if If recall) and all the other gizmos, expenders compressors and so on. I would never recommend gating on the way in. Why would you? Just delete extraneous noise in the DAW.

HF Detail: Characteristic Program-controlled shelving equalizer, approximately 15dB maximum HF boost However, the Gear4music extended warranty scheme provides an enhanced service, and is designed to offer a higher level of protection than many 'free' warranties offered by some retailers and manufacturers.I've done a fair amount of VO, but not generally self-recording. I've never really felt the need to have it processed on the way in (if I'm doing VO, I'll generally record flat anyway). I have a number of preset plugin chains I can then drop it into, dependent on the end result required (commercial, documentary or whatever).
