From the comments on Board Game Geek, this seems to be down to the illustrations within the game. With one comment from user tiagoVIP saying ‘… Dixit Jinx exists to make regular Dixit looks better.’ If you haven’t played Dixit yet, the basic gist of the game is that there will be a storyteller each round, and they will declare a card from their hand with a vague hint while the other players also try to match that hint with one of their cards, with the storyteller aiming to have their card be figured out by at least one player, but not everyone, with the main draw of the game being the wonderfully illustrated cards with surreal imagery, making the vague hints needed even more vague by way of the artwork alone. Each player then counts the number of unit squares in his/her remaining pieces (1 unit square = -1 point). At the moment there are many forms of Dixit, and we’ll cover all the different versions within this review. However, this review will primarily cover Dixit: Odyssey.

Scoring

I first came across Dixit Odyssey in 2016. I was with a bunch of friends and they introduced me to what later became my favourite board game. Voting once on the right card could give you more points, so it’s really a test of how good you are at listening to clues and relating them to the images.

Scoring is the same as regular Dixit, and the game ends when each player has had a chance to be the storyteller. Players who voted for only one image score 1 extra point if they have found the storyteller's image. In any other case, the storyteller scores 3 points as does any player who has found the storyteller's image. Players should have seven image cards in their hand instead of six. The players (except for the storyteller) each hand in two image cards (instead of just one). This way, 5 image cards are always revealed, and players must still find the storyteller's image among those.

Neither a player who has given the storyteller an image nor the storyteller can take part in the vote. The vote and the scoring follow the basic rules (do not use the voting and sco- ring rules for 7 or more players). Then there’s the flexibility in how you play, where it adapts to the people at the table. If you want to play it with your adult friends and turn it into a never-ending series of double entendres, you can absolutely do that. On the other hand, if you want to keep it PG and play with your grandparents, you can do that as well. At that point, there are too many cards to guess, and the storyteller’s card gets lost in the noise. Turning the game from solving a riddle, into wildly guessing. Which ruins the fun. Additionally, you don’t get as many storyteller turns, and for some, that’s the highlight of playing. The storyteller shuffles his card with all the received cards. The base game of Dixit is a 3-6 player game, but if you have the big box version of Dixit Odyssey, you can play it up to 12 players. Each player chooses a voting board and then places the rabbit of the corresponding color on the 0 space of the scoreboard. The 84 image cards are shuffled and 5 are dealt to each player.

The base game features a total of 84 cards that each have a unique and abstract image of the wildest things you could ever imagine. The object of the game is to be the first player to reach 30 points. If all players find the storyteller's image, or if no player finds it, the storyteller scores no points and the other players each score 2 points. The thing is, Dixit doesn’t quite work as magically with 3 players, but will still provide a fun time if you really can’t convince one other person to play it with you, and each player will then always have 7 cards at the end of each turn. The goal for the players is to find the image of the storyteller from among those revealed. Each player secretly votes for the image they believe to be the storyteller's (the storyteller does not participate) by using their voting board.

But the game also prevents a deluge of points being inadvertently handed to the other players, because playing with 7-12 players actually allows a maximum of 3 points even if their card gets more than 3 votes.

The remaining image cards form the draw pile. Each player takes a green voting token. Only one of the players, who will be the storyteller for the first game turn, takes a red voting token in addition to his or her green voting token.
