About this deal

The small sizes sound much bigger than expected, and allow for easy ergonomic movement around the kit, which is perfect for beginners. The shells are made from hardwood poplar and have an excellent tone, especially for Hip Hop and Jazz. They also come with bags which - although a little thin for safe transportation - are perfect to throw over the drums as dampeners. It’s fairly similar to the previous kits. However, it has a few unique features that are exclusive to Tama drums.

For almost 150 years, Gretsch has been synonymous with supreme quality drums. For the last decade, they have offered the Catalina Club as a beginner-sized slice of this history, at an affordable price. Of the many beautiful finishes available, we love the Blue Satin Flame (pictured), but there will certainly be something for all tastes. You’ll also need to make sure you have the space to accommodate a 7-piece kit, and that you have all the hardware necessary to mount it. If not, you’ll have to consider what type of hardware setup you prefer. Tama’s Imperialstar range of kits has been a beginner/intermediate staple since what seems like the dawn of time. Its versatility and good looks are quite routinely overlooked - so we’d like to shed a little light on the Imperialstar. All the toms and the bass drum have 7-ply maple shells while the snare drum has a 10-ply maple shell. These drums are incredibly punchy. It’s very common to see one of these kits being used in a Gospel setting because of this.If you do hit pro drummer territory, a) well done, and b) you'll probably have a pretty clear idea of the drum tone, shell sizes and kit configuration you’re now looking for. At this level you'll be choosing between premium quality drum shells, properly resilient, road-worthy hardware and maybe even a range of custom options to really make the drum kit of your choice your own.

I’ve been able to play dozens of high-end drum sets over the years, but this was definitely one of the best-sounding kits I’ve played. This kit shined in the low to mid ranges, having a strong punchy sound thanks to the DW HVLT shell technology. Gretsch drums are iconic in the music industry. With a firm grip on the world of jazz drums from the early days, and now a roster which includes Underoath's Aaron Gillespie, Green Day's Tre Cool, and Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, Gretsch drums have been proven to cope with plenty of different playing and musical styles. Gretsch fans often comment on how warm, rich and resonant Gretsch drums are - great for anyone who wants a really full drum sound. The Gretsch Catalina Maple is one of the most popular 7 pc drum sets on the market. It has such a good reputation for being a versatile kit that works well in any style of music. Blending these vintage elements with reliable modern hardware is one of the Catalina Club’s most enticing features. Every configuration, whether you’re playing be-bop or Bonham, is centered around a 14” deep bass drum - offering up smooth and punchy tones to build the rest of your sound upon. Coupled with a 30 degree bearing edge, we found that, during testing, these drums provide warm, rich resonance to help your playing transcend.

In a nutshell, every time you turn a tension rod with your drum key, you increase or decrease the tension of the head in that spot. For this reason, it’s crucial that you turn each tension rod equally. Before purchasing your beginner kit, there are two important questions you need to know the answer to.

This is by no means a cheap kit. It’s one of the most expensive drum kits you’ll find on the market, but it’s also one of the best 7 piece drum sets you can get. Most 7-piece drum sets will utilize a lot more cymbals than a traditional 5-piece drum kit, so you might want to think about buying extra cymbals, such as several crash cymbals, as well as effects cymbals such as splash cymbals and china cymbals. This kit combines quality materials, good design features, and affordability, making it an excellent choice for drummers seeking a reliable and versatile kit for various musical situations.

Think about how the angles of the drums will influence the way you hit them. Are your toms or bass drum miles away from your throne? Is everything easy to reach and to play? It’s all about ergonomics and efficiency at the end of the day. If something very simple feels uncomfortable, then the chances are you need to move stuff around a bit. I’ve played the Gretsch Catalina Maple drum set many times at my university; in rehearsal studios, in the studio, and on stage. It always delivers fantastic tones.

The toms are mounted with Tama’s Star mount system. The toms are easier to adjust thanks to the design. All of the hardware on the Tama Superstar drum set feels substantial and fairly heavy-duty. The Catalina Club is one of Gretsch’s most affordable and popular kits, and with a slew of beautiful finish options, some seriously cool shell configurations and bags of vintage style, we can’t say we’re too surprised. This is a precisely constructed kit. The shells are round and the bearing edges textbook. It sounds as good as a modern kit gets. Mahogany has a warm musicality and Cherry has a darker sound, so the two complement each other well. The drums are sensitive too – we approached them softly and they still articulated clearly - with the tone opening up immediately once we laid into them a bit more. I’ve seen so many of these being used as house kits in venues, and it’s mostly due to how affordable this set is combined with how good the drums sound. As ever with budget drum kits, we found the snare to be the weakest link. It’s lightweight and takes some judicious tuning before it will yield a decent sound. The rest of the kit, however, sounds little different from a kit three times the price.

At best, a poorly set up drum set could be harder to play. At worst, it could lead to long-term injury. How to tune your drum kit piece drum sets are sonically and visually impressive and are fun to play. They provide a greater range of tones, more opportunities for exciting rhythmic combinations, and offer a larger visual presence. When you put a new drum head on a drum, tighten up all the tension rods with your fingers first, as much as you can. This is what we call ‘finger tight’ - and it’s a great approximation of equal tension all over the head. DW continues to refine its already awesome Collector's Series. This new hybrid of cherry and mahogany offers a subtle variation of warm, sensitive and concise tones. But if that doesn’t quite float your boat, there are plenty of other custom options to choose from. Another custom heavyweight (literally) is Q Drums - who have been promoted and endorsed by artists of all styles and calibers, although most notably by company co-owner Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails, Paramore, Angels & Airwaves). They are known worldwide for their monstrous metal shells that create some truly lung-puncturing tones. Acoustic vs electronic drums
