About this deal

Wood expands into hotter weather and contracts in colder weather, which can result in board movement and creaks.

Irrespective of what installation method you are going to use for your new floor, you will need good-quality floorboard glue to ensure the job is done efficiently and effectively. Apply wood glue to raw edges of your wood strips. Then, use a rubber mallet to wedge the strips carefully but firmly into the gaps. You must get your substrate perfectly flat before you start any installation, which means that you need to sand down any high spots and fill in any low spots. A good guideline for leveling would be to avoid any more than 3/16 of an inch difference over a 10-foot diameter area. As you may have guessed, how well the joints blend in with the rest of your floor will depend on the colour and shade of the wood that you use. If you have dark floorboards and use a light wood for the strips then they will stand out even if you stain the boards and the joints afterwards so this is something to be aware of, but if done carefully can give a fantastic effect. You also need moisture and humidity readings of the concrete, as this will affect how the wood expands and contracts. If the readings are fairly high, you will need to ensure that you buy hardwood floor glues that have a vapor barrier to protect the wood. You also need to make sure that the substrate is completely clean and dry. We have heard many other suggestions for filling floorboard gaps and have tried most of them. Papier Mache for example sounds like a great idea but you may have to take a couple of months off work to do it! Although a very time consuming job, it can be done quite cheaply as all you need is some wallpaper adhesive and some old news papers. SilentBoard caters to a wide range of applications, making it a versatile choice for various construction projects. Whether you're working on flat roofs, loft conversions, renovations, new builds, bathrooms, kitchens, wetrooms, or mezzanine flooring, SilentBoard delivers exceptional performance. It can be laid on metal, timber, and concrete structures, serving as a reliable base for any type of flooring. Random Pattern: this pattern is created when different width boards or installed in a straight or diagonal pattern, using this pattern creates the illusion that the room is larger.

Assorted brands of wood filler could have different drying times. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to allow for enough drying time. Properly secured floorboards are important to ensure a solid foundation for your home. I’m talking about a squeak free, stable floor that can stand on its own right as the main flooring in a room or one that supports the flooring that you plan to put on top. But should you glue, screw or nail in the floorboards to get those floorboards to sit tight? If your substrate is also wood, then you can choose to nail it down or use a combination of nailing and glue. The nail-down method is by far the cheapest and less labor-intensive method, but it runs a very high risk of creating joint gaps between the floorboards, which can result in a noisy and squeaky floor. However, the combination method of both nailing and gluing down the boards is far better than the nail-down method alone.

Common types of squeaky floors

My article on beading and skirting provides more context and hopefully answer any questions you may have on the size of the expansion gap etc.

Choose SilentBoard for flooring solutions that exceed expectations. Experience the very best in performance and enjoy a floor that enhances your living or working environment while meeting the highest construction and environmental standards.Just to sum up, urethane glue is used when you need flexibility and movement of the floorboards, and water-based glue is used because it is easy to clean up and the volatile organic compound (VOC) content is very low. You need to ensure your substrate is completely flat before you begin the installation, so you will have to fill in any low spots and sand down any high spots. You want to avoid any more than 3/16 of an inch difference over a diameter area of 10-foot.

We have already discussed that there are three methods for securing wood flooring to a substrate. These methods include gluing, nailing, or a combination of both. Below, we will be dealing with the glue-down method over a concrete substrate. These hardwood boards have been finished at the factory, which means that they have already been sanded, stained, and coated with a polyurethane finish, so all you need to do is install them. The boards have been oven-baked and have a very hard acrylic finish, and are also left with a beveled edge on each side of the board. This means that when they are installed, there will be a groove between each board, making the floor not completely flat, which allows moisture to enter through the groove.

Gluing Your Oak Floor Down

Easy Installation and Versatility: Featuring tongue and groove on all four sides, SilentBoard offers a hassle-free and straightforward installation process. Its user-friendly design allows for precise fitting, minimal waste, and compatibility with various structures. Tongue and grove joins do not need to end on a joist, further minimising waste. Square edges should be fully supported. It is frost, moisture, and weather resistant, ensuring long-lasting performance in diverse environments. Firstly, you should find the exact area of the noise to determine what causes the unwanted sound. If you have access to space beneath the floor, like crawl space, it will be much easier for you to eliminate the problem as you don’t need to lift the boards. Spread the glue evenly over the substrate, but be careful not to cover the whole floor in one go. Only do a small section at a time, using the correct trowel. The squeaks that come from between the joists are likely to be caused by floorboards rubbing against the underlying subfloor or the nails that hold down the flooring. You can stop this movement by adding short screws up through the subfloor’s underside and into the bottom of the finished flooring.
