Glengoyne 12: Price Taste: Some sherry right away. Toffee apples. Orange and lemon. Slightly woody with cinnamon and ginger. Decent weight to it considering the low abv. This provides a more natural and authentic experience for those who prefer whiskies without artificial colors. What does Glengoyne mean? Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.

The Service has been prepared by us solely for information purposes to Members and the Service is based on information we consider reliable and we obtain the contents of the Service from a number of different third party sources (including Contributions), but we do not endorse, support, represent, warrant or guarantee the completeness, truthfulness, accuracy, or reliability of the Services and any information therein.

While chill-filtering is commonly employed to prevent haze formation in bottled whisky, some enthusiasts argue that this process can potentially diminish the flavors of the whisky. Does it use caramel coloring?

Glengoyne 12 Years Old Tasting Notes

My first visit to Glengoyne distillery came in the latter half of 2014 during a session of John Lamond‘s fantastic Whisky Certificate Course. This eight week long night class covered the entirety of the whisky-making process and gave a detailed history of the industry, from its beginnings with Friar John Cor to the growth of the blending giants and the modern explosion of single malts. Towards the culmination of the course there was a class outing to a local distillery and since we were based in Glasgow, this gave only two realistic options: Auchentoshan and Glengoyne.

Glengoyne 12 sets itself apart by choosing not to add caramel coloring, which is a common practice in the whisky industry. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. This experience was a precursor to my venture into the liquor shop business, where I had the privilege of curating an extensive collection of liquors, granting me access to thousands of unique bottles from across the globe.

Overall: This malt has a lot going for it. Despite the recalcitrant nose, there is a delectable balance of nutty and fruity notes on the palate that is unrivaled by sherried malts in this price range. The balance here is impeccable, and the finish is flawless – no overly-wooded character flaws. While I still prefer GlenDronach for all-in sherry, this malt contends with Balvenie DoubleWood 12 for the “mid-priced partially sherried malt” slot in my cabinet. In the mouth: clean, fresh, hoppy almost, but then definitely into shades of mead, apples (stewed and green), cider. Plenty of cereal character as well, with an Aultmore-like grassiness to boot. The texture, though, is lovely. Nice and viscous, chewy. Just lovely to sit in the mouth. Digestive biscuits. This is not the most overly complex dram in the world, but it is exceptionally well executed for the price. Conclusions Nose: Hot. Faint elements of sherry – mildly nutty and fruity. Shy – I can’t determine much from the nose. After a rest in the glass, there’s a bit of caramel. Finish: The sherry is more dominant on the finish, with distinct notes of berry jam and fruit juice. Fades with hazelnuts and no bitterness.

We sampled this bottle on the 14th of November 2012. Although it was harsh at first and had very divided opinions, it is actually a very pleasant dram. As with all cask strength whiskies, it improves with a dash of water.
