About this deal

Designated areas or features should be indicated on one of the annotated maps within your plan. If a designation applies, please provide details. Magic Map The HomeGrownHouse (HGH) research project challenges this status quo by exploring new, value-added uses for coppiced sweet chestnut in buildings in the SE of England, where the highest number of new-start building projects sit alongside the most abundant coppiced sweet chestnut. Yet the opportunities this presents for sustainable local timber use are being missed.

The next step of the pilot project is to help woodland owners identified in the focus areas use and understand the myForest Woodland Assessor and the benefits it can bring to the woodland and woodland owner.

The successful projects.

In Britain there is an estimated 700,000ha of under-managed woodlands. In addition, as one of Europe’s least forested countries, the UK needs to fulfil its potential in providing a meaningful contribution towards the country’s timber needs.

Sub-compartments are individual creation and / or management areas outlined within the wider compartment and FMU. myForest supports users through regulation and good practice, making sustainable management and the creation of forests across Britain easier to achieve.

Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot - Reheat (renewable technologies) Ltd (re:heat)

A woodland management plan gives land managers a structured way to plan and organise the sustainable management of woodland to a common industry standard. a plan submission proforma ( MS Word Document, 16.3 KB) if you’re receiving funding from the Countryside Stewardship scheme Forest Lab is a project within myForest which enables landowners and scientists to exchange information about woodlands.

Currently there are three live Forest Lab projects covering resilience, wildfire and tree growth, with plans to offer more in the future: A Forest Agent Account - for those who own or manage multiple properties containing forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation). myForest offers data layers which cover Great Britain, as well as offering layers specific to England, Scotland, and Wales. These layers vary in uses from those which may be specific to forest creation or management, to generic layers useful in all cases. Use the small woodland plan template (macro enabled) ( ODT, 160 KB) template for woodland of an area less than 10 hectares - this is to apply for a felling licence, but is not eligible for funding to prepare a woodland management plan through Countryside Stewardship. Submit your draft woodland management plan to the administrative hub covering your area. Make sure you include:

Felling Licence Online (FLO) is the Forestry Commission’s online felling licence application and management portal. The ClimateMatch tool provides a visualisation of regions with a similar climate to the climate projection for any location in Europe, and so gives an indication of the climate that trees are likely to experience in the future. The tool can also show how a climatic niche will shift under future climate conditions. Information about the tool is available from Forest Research and B4EST. An innovative new initiative known as Forest Lab enables UK woodland managers to get involved in science by collecting and sharing data.

Benefits to forest scientists are access to knowledge, information and data about many different woodlands. We are calling this project Forest Lab. Engagement Agreement myForest is not able to import multipolygons (at this stage) and as a result, users uploading shapefiles containing multipolygons may will encounter the issue where some items from within a shapefile will become visible when imported, however other aspects which would be expected do not become visible. To import mapping into myForest, you will need to provide shapefiles which contain single polygons only. For guidance on converting multi-polygons to single polygons, please refer to guidance produced by the software provider. Here we take a look at two of those projects in more detail. These studies were written by collaborators on the projects. HomeGrownHouse - Grown in Britain There are five levels from entry through to gold, as your score improves, you will move through these levels and eventually become Grown in Britain (GiB) audit ready. If you want to create a woodland plan, you should include all woodland on your property. How to produce your planWith our partners Forest Research (FR) we have developed an ‘Engagement Agreement’ which sets out the joint commitments of Sylva Foundation and FR working together with volunteer ‘stewardship scientists’ participating in Forest Lab. It outlines the general expectations of all parties, and provides examples of commitments which may exist within specific Forest Lab projects. This agreement is an important step in the sign-up process. As part of this support and advice, the Focus Area Pilot is running a series of ten webinars to help woodland owners understand the benefits of managing woodland and how to progress management of their woodlands. Seven webinar titles were decided with the remaining three to be determined by attendees’ interests. If you have not already done so, the first step is to create and map the relevant Sub-compartments for which you wish to apply for a felling licence.
