About this deal

Treatment with activated charcoal should be considered if the overdose in excess of 150 mg/kg has been taken within 1 hour. Treatment with acetylcysteine is used up to, and possibly beyond, 24 hours of ingesting paracetamol. It is most effective if given within 8 hours of ingestion, after which effectiveness declines. If required, the patient should be given intravenous acetylcysteine, in line with the established dosage schedule. Giving acetylcysteine by mouth (unlicensed route) is an alternative if intravenous access is not possible. Acetylcysteine can be given irrespective of the plasma paracetamol concentration:

Low level transaminase elevations may occur in some patients taking therapeutic doses of paracetamol; these elevations are not accompanied with liver failure and usually resolve with continued therapy or discontinuation of paracetamol. Gently push the suppository into your anus with the pointed end first. It needs to go in about 3 centimetres (1 inch). Paracetamol has been found to be non-mutagenic in bacterial mutagenicity assays, although a clear clastogenic effect has been observed in mammalian cells in vitro following exposure to paracetamol (3 and 10 mM for 2h).

If you take too much

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per 5ml, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'. This product also contains 1973.3mg sucrose per dose (total sugars 2g). Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine. Phenylephrine should be used with care in patients with closed angle glaucoma and prostatic enlargement. Empty the contents of the sachet into a cup. Add half a cup of hot (not boiling) water and stir to dissolve. You can add cold water and sugar if you want before drinking.

Signs and Symptoms

These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction and may need immediate treatment in hospital. Other side effects

Further Information Paracetamol: Liver damage is possible in adults who have taken 10 g or more of paracetamol. Ingestion of 5 grams or more of paracetamol may lead to liver damage if the patient has risk factors (see below).
