Typical that is until the tiny "Reader's Guide" at the end, where the "topics and questions for discussion" include:

Book six, The Devil’s Advocate, earned five stars on Crime Fiction Lover, where it was declared “the best Eddie Flynn book yet” – so does The Accomplice manage to reach that very high bar? I was itching to find out. Update 1/25/22: Reposting my review to celebrate that today is publication day! That was the day it all began. Luna and Owen. Owen and Luna. Their names would be inextricably linked for years to come. The one steady thing in their unsteady lives. Before long, neither would be able to imagine a life without the other. It would be hard not to admire the strength of their bond. However, if you were in their orbit, you might come to realize that it was a dangerous place to be. Not everyone there made it out alive. Thanks to Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for sending me an ARC of The Accomplice in exchange for an honest review. I am a huge fan of Ms. Lutz’s last novel, the criminally underrated The Swallows, so I could not wait to dig into her newest book. Paige Delaney of the FBI is outside an expensive house in Old Westbury, New York. They are hunting the Coney Island Killer otherwise known as The Sandman who to date has killed 17 victims and has a grotesque and unique signature with sand. They have reason to believe the Sandman is wealthy hedge fund manager Daniel Miller, he’s not there but his wife Carrie is. She is arrested and six months later indicted by the grand jury on six counts of homicide as she is considered his accomplice. Otto Peltier is her lawyer but he’s not a criminal lawyer and so he pleads with Eddie and his team to take the case but Eddie takes some convincing to accept. Like many others Eddie is full of questions. Is Carrie innocent? Has she been duped and betrayed by Daniel? How can you not know your husband is a serial killer? Kate believes Carrie is a victim too but many a Joe Public believes she’s guilty so would she ever get a fair trial? The team are up against it with this one but let’s face it, when are they not??!! The book, set in 1962, opens in Hamburg with an ageing Auschwitz survivor (Max Weill) trying to persuade his CIA desk analyst nephew Aaron to take on Max’s post war quest to bring Concentration Camp Nazi’s to justice – his expose of a child-murderer Pudulski gained him a Time-Cover feature alongside the (real-life) Wiesenthal. Both mysteries conclude in plausible ways I didn't predict. Achieving that for two timelines is an accomplishment in itself. I would definitely say this was expertly plotted with a satisfying ending.

Success!

This was a typical run of the mill espionage "thriller" featuring a Jewish Nazi hunter/CIA agent in Argentina who falls in love with the daughter of the Nazi he's hunting. It seemed to be written with a movie script in mind. I'm not sure what I think about this novel. I may be way too familiar with the subject matter to thoroughly enjoy it, as none of it surprised or was a revelation to me in any way. As an Israeli, I've heard about Eichmann's trial and Nazi hunters again and again, and was familiar with the moral discussions around the issue. Still, I'm happy that other readers would become more knowledgable on the subject through this novel. Two timelines with two murders and two different mysteries to solve. That's a lot to juggle but it's plenty to keep the reader intrigued. But that's not even the best part of the story- it's the characters that make this charming. One of my favourite things about The Accomplice is the choice to use the third-person, rather than tell the story from Owen or Luna’s perspective. In 2016, long before I started reviewing books, I read “The Passenger”. Apparently, I found the story to be a 3 ⭐️ read, but I liked the ending enough to add an extra half star, for a 3.5 rating.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the readalong hosted by Tandem Collective UK. Well this case really puts Eddie’s skills to the test. With 2 days until the case starts Carrie skips bail. Without her testimony, there is near zero chance of getting her acquitted. But Eddie has to win this case to save a life that is dear to him. These two best friends have been inseparable since the day they met in college in 2002. When their friend Scarlet is unexpectedly found dead on campus, both are likely suspects. Luna is hiding a secret from her past and does not want it revealed. Owen is her onetime boyfriend. Or could someone else have done it? Schramm was an old colleague of Max pre-war and on arrival at Auschwitz pulls Max out of the line, separating him from his son who he assures Max will be OK. In fact his son is immediately gassed (something Schramm later argues was a merciful acceleration of the inevitable) and Schramm then forces Max to assist him in his tasks, albeit never quite pushing him past the point at which he knows Max will prefer death.

Yes, voor @lsamsterdam mocht ik deze nieuwe thriller van @sscav lezen! En ook deze keer was het weer genieten. I found this book to be extremely interesting. Luna and Owen were both complex characters. While they seemed a bit aloof with most people, with one another, they were completely different. The events unfold slowly, but my fascination behind the friendship of Luna and Owen kept me captivated for the most part. However, my enjoyment of this book waned towards the last quarter. Owen and Luna’s secrets were not all that exciting. I was expecting some surprises and twists, but when all was revealed what I realized was that I didn't really care or like Luna and Owen anymore! The ending was also a bit of a letdown for me. There were some red herrings mixed in and many pointless storylines. So as well as a clever legal thriller, we get the added bonus of a serial killer. I love a good serial killer book. This killer is vicious, and takes his victims eyes as trophy’s, leaving behind sand in their place. I will never hear Mr Sandman, bring me a dream the same way again. Told in multiple timelines alternating from past to present, Lutz documents the sometimes-turbulent friendship between Owen and Luna.

The only element I thought didn't work quite as well was the romance, which felt a bit clichéd. But I did like very much how that ended. Gabriel Lake used to be a federal agent, before someone tried to kill him. Now, he's an investigator with a vendetta against the Sandman. He's the only one who can catch him, because he believes that everything the FBI knows about serial killers is wrong. What was missing from this novel was Lutz's dry sense of humor. I think I would have liked the book much more had there been more snark. And what was with all of the characters being SO thirsty all the time and "guzzling" and "gulping" water? That was so weird and mentioned so often I thought there might be a purpose behind it but alas, no. Owen Mann and Luna Grey met under some unexpected circumstances. Both college students, they were hunkering down in the library. Owen, handsome and a smooth talker, tried to engage Luna. She wasn't buyin' what he was sellin'. But all of a sudden, Luna collapses to the floor in an epileptic seizure. Owen never left her side.....ever. Owen and Luna are BFFs—even murder can't break up their friendship. But how about a second murder? Owen's wife is found shot to death and the ensuing police investigation unearths decade-old secrets that could threaten their inseparable bond.
