Even though The Galaxy, and the Ground Within only took place in one (1) location, many fascinating insights were given about other species, other cultures, other planets, other histories. There were also interesting observations and comments on war, political issues, colonization, and respect of human (or alien) rights. For the men and women on this voyage, there is so much more on the line than just a little adventure, especially for one Martian woman who is hoping to leave everything behind.

Ohan - Sianat Pair and the navigator of the Wayfarer. They help Sissix and keep to themselves for the most part. But the end of this story really blew me away involving them.I wouldn´t call this space opera anymore, because this implies and relates to the cheap soap opera name giver, it´s more of a high social sci-fi series, something screaming for an own genre name, cyberlove, futurefu... eel, alien affairs, etc. The actual story is about who these individuals are, where they’ve been and where they want to go from here.

She moved to San Francisco to study theater arts at the University of San Francisco. [1] Career [ edit ] And then, there are other books, like Ancestral night, also a female SciFi author, that have the character driven emotionally insightful story that Chambers so excels at, but that also put serious research into getting the hard science right, in a way that is a delight to read, from emerging ships out of superluminal travel being particle cannons, to how confused researchers are still about gravity, to sensible spaceship design, to time lag when communicating with large minds. There's some cool, if familiar stuff here - The Long Way... is set in a Mass Effect-like society of aliens where humanity is very much a bit player. The Bioware similarities also extend to a human-AI relationship, where the human suffers from a physical condition (Dwarfism), much like Joker and EDI in the Mass Effect games. The worldbuilding is good, and Chamber’s characters are very diverse, if not very interesting. The most interesting thing about this novel is the fact that it concerns non-humans but, to be honest, their experiences, desires, fears, and arcs felt a bit too 'human'. Recommended to me as a cure for the heavy, blood and guts diet that's so prevalent in today's SF/F, I was more than just a little bit interested in an antidote.Great characters. This is a character-driven story. Every crew member matters and is made interesting and memorable. This isn’t a story about the Chosen One saving the galaxy. This is the story of the crew on a ship that builds traffic routes. Sure, they’re a rather unique bunch, but ultimately there are a lot of ships like theirs and a lot of equally interesting destinies in the galaxy. You had to pause in the face of reflex, ask yourself if the narrative you attached to the knee-jerk was accurate. Once she’d grasped this, she could never again see life as a static thing, something with one immutable definition. The universe was not an object. It was a beam of light, and the colours that it split into changed depending on whose eyes were doing the looking. Nothing could be taken at face value. Everything had hidden facets, hidden depths that could be interpreted a thousand ways – or misinterpreted in the same manner. Reflexes kept a person safe, but they could also make you stupid.” Another wonderful addition to the Wayfarers series. Although I don’t think any of them have topped A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, I’ve enjoyed continuing nonetheless. Locus Awards Winners". Locus. 27 June 2020. Imagine a male hard SciFi author who wrote absolutely brilliant scifi on the technological and physical parts, but also kept adding long sequences where people explain that they have treated their depression through the magic of pulling themselves together, treated their disability through the magic of yoga, dealt with jealousy by suppressing it and with anger by unleashing it on weaker people, so that they are now perfectly mentally stable, physically healthy and social, and had all the other characters go, unironically, wow, that makes sense, this strikes me as ideal and like it would totally work. - This is how I feel every time a Chambers character explains how their ship is a perpetual energy machine and everyone around them nods.) Nothing but all the love and respect in the entire world for my captain.Alas, this is not how “making money” works, and most studios would probably opt for a longer series with more earnings potential. But with the right minds behind the project, a Wayfarers series could make a splash in the same way the The Queen’s Gambit did, as a one-off, self-contained limited series. Launch, make a big impression, and exit stage left once the story has come to a close, remaining in the minds of viewers and readers for years to come as one of the greats. Current Outlook: Middling At Best Record of a Spaceborn Few,” the third of the series is set several hundred years after humans got on board the Exodus Fleet and abandoned the Earth. They spent hundreds of years looking for a new home among the stars until their descendants were eventually accepted by a civilization that governed the Milky Way. But that had happened several hundred years ago. In the current world, the Exodus Fleet remains the birthplace of many people but a relic of the times. Pei - Another one of my absolute favourites, we have actually met Pei before, as Ashby's love interest. But seeing her on her own and discovering her character as an indivual, her wants and goals, as well as her struggles (paticularly about her relationship with Ashby - which she feels a lot of guilt about) was such a pleasure to read. Her storyline is so beautiful, coming to terms with what she wants for her life and standing up for herself to herself (idk if that makes sense but it's the best way I can describe it!). Also some of the choices she maes towards the end of the book were so impactful and I think will resonate with a lot of women. And had this been punctuated by anything like plot and actual tension and if ever doubting that anything being less than hunky-dory with our decent to the bone protagonists was possible I’d be alright with it. But when the entire book is just fluffy light dessert, I get bored and irritated. I also want some broccoli and maybe even a cheese* enchilada. But I would really prefer if she accordingly either skipped the science bits, or consulted a scientist on them.
