About this deal

Is flannel the same as wynciette? Almost! The two fabric types are similar, but flannel tends to be a slightly heavier weight fabric. How is Flannel made? During the height of its output, Fox Brothers became one of the largest employers in the country. Subsidiary factories opened throughout the country, with over 5,000 individuals ensuring the smooth operation of the cloth production. A couple of years ago, a friend asked me for advice on dressing down his normal suit-and-tie wardrobe. If you buy a flannel suit today, chances are the fabric is made by Vitale Barberis Canonico, because they provide excellent quality that is also a great value. You might wonder how that’s possible, but the company is vertically integrated to control everything from the wool production (think sheep shearing, yarn spinning, and dyeing) to weaving, finishing and selling the fabric. Take a look at how they make their fabric – quite impressive!

Most men today will have never worn flannel trousers, let alone a flannel suit. Suits for them are worsted wool – wool that has been combed and pressed, made sleek and sharp. Depending on which material it’s made from, the world’s biggest flannel producer may be any of the following three countries: Welsh flannel was traditionally made from wool, and most European flannel types are also woolen. Until recent centuries, cotton was not as commonly used in Europe since it was primarily produced in India. Synthetic materials don’t have to harm the environment. GRS helps companies that make an effort to use recycled materials in their textile products. Even natural fibers like wool can be recycled, so GRS has a wide purview.

Unlike most heavy-weight flannels, the Fireside feels more fitted. Unabashedly ‘not boxy,’ the Fireside tapers slightly around the body and more assertively in the arms. It wears less overshirt, falling distinctively in the formal shirt cut. This makes it a clear winner for our best heavy-weight flannel shirt. So a milled woollen cloth used for a coat is not normally called a flannel. Flannel most generally refers to a milled cloth (worsted or woollen) used for trousers or suits. Material: While many materials can be used to make flannel, not all materials are suitable for this fabric. Silk, for instance, is too fine to be made into flannel, which is supposed to be both soft and insulative.

Some flannel weavers are masters of their craft, and other factories mass-produce cheap bolts of sub-par fabric. Companies that focus on sustainability and organic, natural fibers are also, as a general rule, more likely to create high-quality flannel fabric.Cotton flannel became more popular during the Colonial expansionist period, and this material remains highly sought after for soft, rich flannel garments or bedsheets with napping on both sides. In 2020, we saw 47 flannels and listed 15 flannels on our men’s buyers guide. In 2021, we tested an additional 20 flannels, highlighting nine new flannels on our list. In 2022 we saw an additional 20 flannels, adding 12 new flannels. And this year we looked at 33 flannels, adding 11 new flannels to the buyer’s guide. It is generally used for making lighter-weight versions of flannel. (As woollens have shorter fibres and therefore can’t be spun into fine – and so lightweight – yarn.)
