About this deal

Shredding Fire might get there as a second Dire Avenger option for a big unit – it isn’t cheap, but it lets their shurikens get extra AP on a 5 rather than a six, good if you’re planning to go wild with combos. Burning Heat gives Fire Dragons the eye-catching bonus of automatically wounding within half range, but it’s hard enough to set up that you might just end up taking Blazing Fury for extra range instead. Despite the fact that the Wraithlord construct exists in realspace, the spirit which controls it is never able to perceive reality as well as those who are still alive, as a soul in a Spirit Stone inhabits a dimension that is in both realspace and the Warp simultaneously. To this day, there remain just a small number of mortal warriors able to fight for Iyanden. Consequently, those living few are accompanied to battle by a large number of the souls of the dead, and it is not uncommon to see vast armies of Ghost Warriors striding to war at their behest. This newly imbued Spirit Stone can then be bonded with the wraithbone of a large robotic construct. The merging of an Aeldari soul and machine results in the birth of a powerful Ghost Warrior.

The Ghost Warriors are among the most powerful forces that the Asuryani send into battle. Each one combines a towering robotic wraith-construct with the soul of a deceased Aeldari warrior. Guided by a Spiritseer, and armed with some of the most devastating weaponry in the craftworlds' arsenal, a host of Ghost Warriors strides across the worlds of the galaxy bringing immortal vengeance. I probably wouldn’t lay any money on seeing Wraithlords jump up to the top tables this coming season, but I don’t think I’d bet against it, either- they have a lot of things going for them and it’s very possible that we’ll see some sort of shift in the meta or breakthrough list that will push them into the spotlight. They’re definitely one of the many units in the Craftworlds codex that you should keep an eye on, because it’s very possible that they will make their presence known in a big way at some point in the future- and maybe you’ll even use them in a list of your own. The predominant type of Ghost Warrior in use among the craftworlds is the Wraithguard. These giant robotic warriors are shaped from the immensely resilient substance known as wraithbone, and tower above the Spiritseers that accompany them upon the battlefield.

The most feared of all the Wraithguard are usually referred to as Wraithblades -- few Asuryani will speak their true name in the Aeldari Lexicon, Klaivaulch, for fear of inciting the wrath of Khaine. Stand Firm : 10pt upgrade on Dire Avengers for ObSec. Makes a six model Avenger squad a super flexible utility unit, since they also get native Action + Shoot. A Wraithlord, also called an Iron Knight, Wraith-giant and by the Imperium an Eldar Dreadnought, is a Craftworld Aeldari robotic combat walker known as a Ghost Warrior that contains no living pilot; rather, it is merely a robotic shell, a repository of the animating soul of a dead Asuryani hero. Wraithlords are graceful but mighty giants that dwarf their smaller Wraithguard Ghost Warrior cousins. Such vile alien necromancy is despicable. It is right that we view with suspicion any who use these illicit methods. Even if we are forced to work with them, we are not to trust them." If the stone can be recovered, it is then customary for it to be taken into one of the craftworld's bio-domes, where the soul is released into the Infinity Circuit -- the Asuryani's source of eldritch psychic energy, a place of rest, and sanctuary from the Warp.

The other big (literally) splashy toy here is the Avatar, who certainly looks at least interesting thanks to the Webway gate existing. He’s expensive, but hugely resilient to big shots, and can be buffed to the gills with Farseer powers. Being able to place a Webway gate and then pull the Avatar with Phantasm when needed (i.e. against Tau) puts him in an interesting spot where it’s probably overpriced, but lists that can work with him might exist. The great measure of control afforded by this gestalt mind gives the pilot mastery over the construct's psychically-powered weapon systems and affords the war machine an acrobatic grace that belies its massive size. The clarity of thought provided by the living twin ensures that the construct moves with the speed typical of the Aeldari race, whilst the psychic link between the pilot and their departed sibling allows them to commune with not only the animating forces of the twin, but also the spirits of former incumbents that once controlled the construct's long-limbed form. Stash hits or wounds if you’re about to go big with an “exploding” or mortals on 6s effect, or shoot Fire Prisms. The mind of an Asuryani warrior or Seer is like a bright beacon in the murk of realspace, a guiding light which enables a Ghost Warrior to perceive the world around it. It is common practice for a Wraithlord to be accompanied in battle by a Spiritseer, an expert in matters ethereal who steers the Ghost Warrior to ever greater feats of destruction.Wraithlords are perhaps the ultimate sacrifice that an Eldar can make- possessed by a spirit stone containing the soul of a departed warrior, unlike the lesser constructs such as Wraithguard, a Wraithlord holds the mind of a great hero of legend. Like a Dreadnought, they represent a service that passes even beyond the bounds of death, and the Craftworlds are loathe to invoke such service, but in times of utter desperation it may be necessary to draw upon their acumen and fighting prowess.

This is where we should take special note of the Wraithlord’s combination of statline and other bonuses. For a relatively cheap cost (~105) we can get four effective guns and a dangerous melee weapon built-in, all on a T8 chassis with a goodly pile of wounds and the -1 to hit penalty from Alaitoc. This is why Nanavati and many other members of his team were considering running Wraithlords in their previous LVO lists, as I alluded to in the opening- the combination of versatility and durability is something that a lot of people don’t expect from Craftworlds armies and especially when brought in larger numbers (which is to say trios, thanks to the FAQ rulings) they can be a real hassle to get rid of. From the stoic ranks of the Wraithguard to the towering war machines known as Wraithknights, the formidable Ghost Warriors are only used in times of desperation -- for there is a greater darkness about them. They are a walking reminder that, for the Craftworld Aeldari, death offers no release from war and bloodletting. A Dark Enemy (232.M41) - In the aftermath of a battle on Cullrak, in which the Asuryani of Mymeara successfully fight off a daemonic incursion, a huge raiding party from the Drukhari Kabal of the Fiend Ascendant threatens a clutch of the Asuryani's Spirit Stones. It is greatly feared that the Kabal will retreat to Commorragh and debase the souls of Mymeara's dead. With their numbers already considerably depleted from the previous battle, the Asuryani of Mymeara have little choice but to command their Spiritseers to unleash the Ghost Warriors in their defence. The wraith-constructs launch one of the most vengeful strikes in the craftworld's history and numerous Kabalite Warriors and their Raiders are incinerated by searing Wraithknight plasma blasts.

Playstyle

A Ghost Warrior is a wraithbone robotic construct utilised exclusively by the Craftworld Aeldari in times of urgent need. For the Asuryani, death does not guarantee respite from war, for the species' need is greater than that of its constituent souls.
