The choice of name was political, to compliment his patron Christopher Hatton, who sponsored Drake’s world voyage. Hatton’s family coat of arms was a Golden Hind. When the expedition crossed the Strait of Magellan, The Pelican was renamed The Golden Hind by Drake in honour of one of the patrons of the voyage Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms bore a golden doe. This would eventually culminate in the Anglo–Spanish War. Before setting sail, Drake met the queen face-to-face for the first time and she said to him, "We would gladly be revenged on the King of Spain for divers injuries that we have received." The explicit object was to "find out places meet to have traffic." Drake, however, acted as a privateer, with unofficial support from Queen Elizabeth.

On 26 September, Golden Hind sailed into Plymouth with Drake and 59 remaining crew aboard, along with a rich cargo of spices and captured Spanish treasures.
