A dimmer setting is also available on some smart plugs, such as the Lutron Caseta Dimmer Plug as mentioned above. This is a great feature if the smart plug is intended for lighting as it gives you much more control than just switching on and off. Testing the plug went off without a hitch. It showed no hesitation when responding to app commands to turn on and off. Alexa voice commands were just as responsive. The plug followed my schedules without incident, and the Smart Action I created worked without issue; for example, I configured the plug to turn on when a Kasa Spot camera detected motion. Best If You Have Other Kasa Products Most smart plugs come with a timer. Using this, you can schedule when you want the appliance to switch on and off — great for switching on the lights when you’re on vacation. TP-Link has released the Tapo product line in the United States, and elsewhere in the world. These smart devices are going to operate differently than the Kasa system, and each product range will have some different and unique products. Indeed, TP-Link’s statement in 2022 mentions that they have continued plans for Kasa – but it doesn’t mention Tapo directly. So it does look like TP-Link are firmly standing behind the Kasa brand for now.Unlike with the best Wi-Fi routers, the best mesh Wi-Fi systems often combine their 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into one network. This isn't a problem with other devices but many smart plugs and other smart home devices only work on the 2.4 GHz band. If you've encountered this problem, there is a fix that might work. Connect your phone to the Smart Plug Wi-Fi. There is a difference between Android and iOS phone in this step. Tapo devices use a completely different approach to conductivity. Many of Tapo’s initial products required a 922MHz connection to a Wi-Fi- enabled Tapo Hub, which will then control all the other devices. This means that Tapo devices should not be interfering with your home’s Wi-Fi. However some of Tapo’s newer products now allow for “hub free” connections over Wi-Fi. Grouping – Use Grouping to combine your smart plugs with other Kasa Smart devices for seamless control with one single tap on your smartphone.I know, this may not be for everyone, but it works great for anybody who are a slight bit tech savvy and aren’t helpless in front of a computer. Follow the instruction on the Kasa app to power on the HS100, and wait for the Wi-Fi light to blink orange and green. These minor points aside, it couldn’t be easier to live with the HS100. Plug it in and within a few seconds it’s ready for you to link it to your local Wi-Fi network. You’ll need to install the free Kasa app, which detects the plug and lets you configure a name and custom icon to help you remember what it’s connected to. While the plug itself only supports 2.4GHz networks, the app had no problem finding it over our phone’s 5GHz connection to a dual-band router. Once you’ve set up your Echo device, plug in your TP-Link smart plug. If Alexa or the Alexa app says “New plug found,” go straight to step 3.
Some smart home ecosystems are significantly compromised if your broadband fails, but Kasa was quite resilient. Local control still worked well, with the HS100 responding to scenes and individual instructions. Of course, like other smart devices, you can’t control it from outside your home network if your internet connection goes down. The TP-Link HS100 Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug is an attractive and dependable way to add smart control to dumb appliances in your home. With no hub to invest in it’s a cheap option, yet the fully-featured Kasa app allows remote and scheduled control and supports integration with other smart and automated systems. One surprise was that even with no device plugged in, the HS100 consumed a constant 2-3 watts of power. Over 24 hours we measured 60 watt-hours, equating a monthly consumption of roughly 2 kilowatt hours. While the 30p or so that’ll cost won’t break the bank, it does take the shine off the savings you might otherwise make by using a smart switch to turn off devices. It’s also odd given that TP-Link’s Kasa smart bulbs consume less than half a watt in standby. Should you buy the TP-Link HS100 Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Kasa lets you group multiple smart devices into a custom scene, giving you an easy way to configure several with a single tap. For example, you might create Welcome Home to turn on your smart lights along with a heater plugged into the HS100.
