About this deal

Ten minutes down the coast, Puerto Calero is a purpose-built marina resort, good for yacht-spotting and luxury shopping. If you are hiring a car and exploring the island it´s highly likely that you will be passing through Teguise at some stage as it is en route to many attractions in the North and in quite close proximity to the beach at Famara. This process is labour intensive (everything has to be done by hand), plus the vineyards need lots of room per vine, compared to regular rows of vines you see in other countries. As a result, the wineries can’t produce huge quantities, so I’d recommend drinking as much as you can while you’re on the island! The standard local greeting is a kiss on both cheeks, but handshakes are fine too especially if they know that you are a tourist. I met a Lanzarote local in London just before our trip. She said she lived in Punta Mujeres and we simply had to visit. It’s a traditional fishing village, so not particularly touristy… which when you see it might surprise you! Punta Mujeres is home to beautiful natural pools with crystal clear water Public transport: there are no trains or trams on Lanzarote, but the local bus network is clean, safe and reasonably efficient. The network is not totally comprehensive, though, and routes and timetables are geared more towards locals than tourists. However, La Gomera’s hands-down highlight is the magical, misty Parque Nacional de Garajonay, whose elevated, Unesco-protected laurisilva forests conceal some of the Canaries’ most rewarding walking paths. A fabulous route through the 40 sq km park meanders down the Hermigua valley from the Alto de Garajonay (1,484m). Hotel Fonda de la Tea has rustic rooms, apartments and independent homes in Tejeda (all from €105). In Las Palmas, Bed and Chic (doubles from €52) makes a boutique splash across two tile-floored 20th-century buildings, or stay at the beautifully revamped, 19th-century landmark hotel Santa Catalina (doubles from €110). Get to grips with the nitty gritty on bank opening times, telephone codes, transfer times and many other items of Essential holiday information. Read in depth guides to Costa Teguise, Matagorda, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero. From visiting beautiful beaches and adventures through the volcanic landscapes, to wine tours, amazing architecture, local cuisine and markets, these are the best things to do in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote’s Montañas del Fuego spent six consecutive years erupting during the 18th century, destroying 26 villages and a third of the island’s best farmland. Now, the Timanfaya National Park is Lanzarote’s biggest tourist attraction. Dedicated buses snake among lava flows and up steep-sided craters, and guides demonstrate that although this volcanic landscape is classed as dormant, a chamber of boiling magma 4km below the surface will create a man-made geyser if a bottle of water is tipped into a fissure. More remote corners of the park can be explored by camel or on guided hikes — unescorted walks aren’t permitted, for your own safety. Moving now from subterranean exploration to peak adventuring, the pinnacle of La Palma’sscenic highlights is theCaldera de Taburiente National Park, where the finest views of the archipelago can be seen from Roque de los Muchachos. That being said there are plenty of great beaches in Costa Teguise and the resort is ideally located for exploring Lanzarote's many attractions. Playa Blanca Costa Teguise scores highly when it comes to eating out. Most of the best restaurants are located inthe PlayaBastian area of the resort, with Oscars, El Navarroand Isla Bonita all ratedhighly. Read our guide to restaurants in Costa Teguise for more in depth information. TransportPlaya Grande: The busiest beach, located on the main strip, complete with pedalos and sun beds, is Puerto del Carmen’s raison d’etre. Once the best beach on the island, the sand quality has unfortunately become quite degraded in recent years. Nevertheless its shallow waters mean that it offers some of the warmest sea temperatures and best bathing conditions on the island. Playa Chica: Popular with locals, this small beach, sheltered by volcanic reefs offers great snorkelling and diving.

Family-owned Pensión Enriqueta (+34 928 842 051, doubles €35) is one of La Graciosa’s tourism pioneers, with cheery, rustic rooms in Caleta de Sebo. The island has three resorts and the vast majority of visitors stay in one of the three, with only the more adventurous choosing to stay in Arrecife or one of the island’s rural areas. Situated on the south eastern coast to the north of Arrecife, Costa Teguise is Lanzarote’sthird largesttourist resort. La Frontera’s boho-feel El Sitio (doubles from €50) occupies a thoughtfully converted, sustainably run bodega with seven lava-stone casitas and views across El Golfo. Or stay at the east-coast Parador de El Hierro (doubles from €97), which has an elegant historical look, a pool with a view of the Atlantic and a smart restaurant. Naviera Armas has services from Gran Canaria to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, La Gomera and Lanzarote, and Tenerife to El Hierro and La Palma.Another big reason to visit Haria is to take in the views of the Valley of a Thousand Palms. In reality, there aren’t 1000, but this is the greenest area of Lanzarote. While you’ll see the palm-filled oasis as you wander the town, some of the best views are from the LZ10 as you approach from the north. Valley of a Thousand Palms in Haria, Lanzarote See the natural pools in Punta Mujeres Surf-friendly Famara beach in the north is one of the Canaries’ most beautiful, and you can do day trips to the dazzling beaches at Punta del Papagayo in the south. Don’t miss the natural pools in Punta Mujeres and, time permitting, all-natural Playa del Risco (accessible by a one-hour hike), or Los Caletones coves near Órzola. There are still a number of small, sea-side villages which have escaped the developers' excesses found in the main resort areas. Caleta de Famara

SCUBA divers will love exploring the Museo Atlántico – an underwater sculpture museum designed by Jason deCaires Taylor. There are over 300 life-size casts resting on the seabed close to Playa Blanca. One of the best things to do in Lanzarote is go on a tour of Cueva de los Verdes. Created 22,000 years ago by a lava river that solidified on the top, this volcanic tube is 7km long. The magical pool in Cueva de los VerdesIf you’re looking for somewhere great to eat in Haria, I’d suggest lunch at La Puerta Verde. We had an amazing meal of steak and salad, all cooked and seasoned to perfection. It was one of the best meals we ate in Lanzarote! See views of the Valley of a Thousand Palms
