About this deal

It's missing the wooden base bit. It plays the tune very well. Usually the quality of the music-box in these things isn't as good. A very large part of our job is the conservation and preservation of assets and making them available. But one of our directives is to help the company keep its history alive and to make sure it’s accurate. We rely on our history so much—when you think about a film like Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs, that came out in 1937. That’s a very old film, but because it’s animation and because it’s still so relevant to children today, whether it’s theme park attractions or streaming on Disney+, it’s really important that the history of that film is still available to our filmmakers, to our marketing and press and publicity and publishing people, to the people who make toys, and those who do attractions at the park. A well-indexed collection of our history is really important to Disney, probably more so than anywhere else I can think of. Color still depicting a press release for Walt Disney’s animated feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Courtesy Disney; Walter Elias, Lillian Bounds I have tea every week with a friend who collects music boxes. She has some music box snow globes, likes snow globe music boxes especially and was showing me a new one. I remarked that I didn't really care about snow globes but would love to have one that was like the one in 'Mary Poppins' and played the song. Many of the nannies stood in the large queue of applicants outside the Banks’ house at the start of the film were actually male actors in drag. Mary Poppins herself was originally written as strict and pompous in the books but Disney made her kind and gentle as well as keen on discipline.

I’ve always thought that Mary Poppins is David Tomlinson’s movie as much as it is Julie Andrews’. When, as Mr Banks, he gets his hat punched inside out and his bosses destroy his umbrella, he plays the scene with a pathos that, to a child of seven or eight, does terrible violence to the notion of parental infallibility. Tomlinson is the great heart of the movie, the warmth to Andrews’ splinter of ice, who, while sustaining the film’s line in jokey verbosity, still manages to be moving. The character of Bert is actually a mix of several of Mary Poppins' friends from the original books. Among them is the minor character of a chimney sweep. It was a drawing of the sweep by one of the animators that inspired the film’s song "Chim Chim Cheree". The houses on Cherry Tree Lane where the Banks house is were built on a diminishing scale, so getting smaller as the lane got further away. The Cherry Tree Blossoms in Cherry Tree Lane were made of plastic and imported from France and Portugal - each leaf and bloom had to be hand-mounted.

The Mary Poppins Producers didn't inform Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks) or Matthew Garber (Michael Banks) about some elements that were going to happen. Jane Banks’ expression when Mary Poppins takes out many items from her carpet bag is genuine. Along with the scream when Mary Poppins gave the children medicines of different colors. Experience the enchantment of our globe light with mesmerizing color-changing features with music, enhancing your Christmas ornaments and creating a sparkling glitter globe centerpiece. There are also only two children featured in the Walt Disney version of the film instead of four. The other two were twins John and Barbara. One of Julie Andrews' favorite songs in Mary Poppins was "Stay Awake." When she heard that there were plans to cut it, she wrote a letter of concern to P.L. Travers who instantly insisted that the song remain in the film.Mary Poppins is the Disney film hat holds the record of having the longest in-print status on video. It was released on VHS in 1981, and has been re-released several times since, so much so it has managed to stay in stores since then. Not once has Mary Poppins been out-of-print on video/DVD. The film inspired the eighth season episode of The Simpsons entitled "Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious", featuring a parody of Mary Poppins called "Shary Bobbins" who helps out the Simpson family when Marge loses her hair due to stress. It also includes spoof songs, "The Perfect Nanny", "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Feed the Birds" and "The Life I Lead". Cline’s also a passionate advocate for the preservation of these priceless cultural artifacts and brings genuine joy to what she calls her dream job. We had a chance to chat with her about the tireless but never boring work of an archivist, how her job has changed alongside filmmaking technology, and the movie that ignited her enchantment with all things Disney. Adriana Caselotti was the live-action reference model for the character of Snow White Another sky high secret in the production of Mary Poppins, is that the wires holding up Julie Andrews were darkened with shoe polish to reduce reflection from the studio lights. You’ve worked at the Disney archives since the pre-digital age, how has your job changed as filmmaking and computer technology have changed so dramatically?
