Shanghai brings in a lot of the country’s overall revenue and is home to one of the busiest ports in the entire world. Cultured pearl farming is a relatively modern industry, and a few Hong Kong ventures rose to the challenge in the 1950s. But they struggled against Japanese competitors who came to dominate the trade. The city’s last pearl farm was shuttered in 1981. It wasn’t just British financiers and Japanese industrialists that were getting rich; gangsters and thugs from all nationalities were able to establish a foothold. The Japanese invaded the International Settlement in 1942 and interned Allied nationals in detention centers until the Japanese surrendered to the Americans in 1945. Soon after, the Communists liberated Shanghai in 1949.

While culturing pearls is no longer common knowledge among the Hong Kong fishing community, Leung hopes his successful harvest will set a precedent for other fishermen to follow. But none of them are produced locally. Over-fishing and market forces have long devastated the wild pearl farming trade in the city. Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centers and commercial ports.In March, a group of local fishermen inspired by Yan’s project carried out a harvest of Akoya pearls — the first to be done in Hong Kong in years. During the first half of the 20th century, both cities experienced their first golden age. By that time, Hong Kong ranked among the great trading ports of the British Empire behind only London and Liverpool, while Shanghai reigned supreme as the foremost international metropolis in East Asia. For a visitor from the recent past, Shanghai would be virtually unrecognizable. Basking in its boomtown exuberance, 21st-century Shanghai emanates a feeling of energy and adventure. This is a city which has no time for nostalgia as it blasts off into the future. Then again, making money through economic adventure and old-fashioned industriousness is nothing new to the Shanghainese. The original characteristics that created Shanghai prosperity are still prevalent today: Chinese-Western trading relationships, innovative and entrepreneurial Chinese and Asian migrants, cheap, hard-working and plentiful labor and relatively hands-off government policy. From 1954 to 1975, Saigon was known as the Pearl of the Orient Sea because it held joy and magnificence inside the city.
