About this deal

This can be adjusted to suit your preferences and to either hold in its firm setting more frequently, or not so frequently.

Probably one of the most underrated forks around, Manitou’s Mattoc has been around for a long time but it’s still worth looking for, especially as online pricing is often much better than official RRPs. We’re going to cover all the 34mm legged forks from X-Fusion here as they all share very similar architecture and features, just for different wheel sizes. Slant is the 26in 100-160mm travel fork, Sweep the 27.5in with the same travel option, and Slide the 29er which stretches from 100-140mm travel. There was a Trace 34mm fork which you might find too, which was a precursor to the Slide but with a fancier unicrown construction, but the latest Trace forks use 36mm legs. Please note: These forks have a straight 1 1/8" steerer tube and 9mm QR dropouts. Images are for illustration only.

RockShox Reba

The Judy moniker is another blast from the past. It is designed as a low to mid-range fork that offers plenty of clearance for Plus tyres up to 2.8in wide, using Boost hub spacing to achieve this. It comes in either 100mm or 120mm of travel and 27.5- or 29-inch wheel sizes.

Though what's important to note is the Ultimate's damper has been machined to shed weight, whereas the Select's damper hasn't. The coil spring versions are very smooth over small stuff but definitely go for the more progressive and surprisingly well-balanced and easily tuneable Solo Air spring if you can. Either way, the TurnKey damper manages to keep its head on a reasonably long way into faster, rougher sections before it starts to get unpredictable. The Pike comes in 120mm, 130mm, 140mm, 150mm and 160mm travel options in both 27.5- and 29-inch wheel sizes, with clearance for up to 2.8in tyres as standard. Then, there's the Pike Select+ that runs most of what the Ultimate gets but it drops the lightweight crown and Buttercups tech. This one looks to be OEM only and isn't available aftermarket. This is an updated version of the Charger 2 damper seen on 'Ultimate' forks with some changes to the valving, such as less high-speed compression damping and more low-speed compression damping to make the fork sit up high in its travel. The motion control damper allows maximum adjustment. It features both rebound and compression adjustment. This is very useful when you are riding on different terrains. The travel of the fork is also adjustable from 80 to 120 mm. stanchions (steel stanchions on Judy [B1] and Silver TK [A2] and Silver TK [A3], aluminium stanchions on Gold RL [A2] and Gold RL [A3]). Finally, the SID SL looks like another OEM fork, but this one gets a Rush XC damper with a DebonAir air spring. This fork gets the same seals and fluid as the rest of the range.

It's important to find out if your bike features a tapered head tube to take a tapered steerer though. Nearly all modern-day frames feature a tapered head tube, but older or more budget bikes may use a straight non-tapered design. How we test the best budget mountain bike forks Gently step off the bicycle without compressing the fork any further. Note the sag percentage where the o-ring stopped. If necessary, readjust the air pressure to reach your target sag position. These, new for 2023, add an additional 5% of torsional stiffness but are removable if you're not interested. Flight AttendantThe SID SL is the all-out cross-country racing fork in the lineup and in 2023, it got a range of updates. The Recon is designed as a cost-effective, high-value cross-country fork built with 32mm stanchions. With travel from 80mm up to 150mm. It also fits up to 2.8in tyres without fenders. The variable rate allows the Judy Gold to adapt to different terrains. Hence, it can be a good choice for those who want to explore different terrains. The ZEB Select is specced with a DebonAir+ air spring and the more basic Charger RC damper. The rest of the technology is carried over from the Select+ model, apart from the Pressure Relief Valves, which can be retrofitted if desired.

Winner: The winner is the Judy Silver model for its less price. But this cheap tag comes at a cost. So, Which One Is Better?Whether you go for Judy gold or silver, always use the best fork spacers. Otherwise, you’ll be in deep trouble as the adjustment will be completely off. If you aren’t confident about your current spacers, here are some good options- The ZEB Select+ also comes with a DebonAir+ air spring and Charger 3 damper. In fact, it gets all of the goodness found on the Ultimate but without the Buttercups and machined crown. We don't have a price on this model as it looks like it's OEM only. Adjustments are an absolute necessity if you want more control over your bike. It allows you to adjust your bike for different situations. Commonly made up of a spring and a damper which work together to create a smooth rider experience, a metal coil spring can be found on lower-end versions or the occasional gravity-focused fork.
