About this deal

Released by Sovtek, made in Russia, It has army green chassis, used the same circuit as the "Red Army Overdrive" and "Civil War". Here’s what it sounds like in the Muffuletta: The Ram’s Head Big Muff Sample – Bass The Ram’s Head Big Muff Sample – Treble As with the original Russian big muff, Electro-Harmonix have kept things simple with the Green Russian Big Muff reissue with three knob control – volume, sustain and tone. The Muff Fuzz is a simple fuzz whose circuit is based on only two transistors (similar to a Fuzz Face). The pedal is housed in the same compact box as the LPB-1 (Linear Power Booster). 1969 – Big Muff Pi (V1) The Russian BMP tank and the Russian BMP pedal - which, contrary to popular belief, was not built built from old tank or military scrap parts

While working on the Smashing Pumpkins' massive Teargarden by Kaleidyscope project in 2009, Billy Corgan revealed in a blog that he used a vintage late 1970s Big Muff for Siamese Dream, which appears to be an op-amp Big Muff. I have written about it in this section . So how does the Creamy Dreamer pedal actually sound? Read my review HERE Another highly versatile od/distortion/fuzz, the Shigeharu is capable of everything from punchy overdrive to full on IC Muff destruction. Holding down the momentary Havoc foot switch engages a spitty upper octave for maximum chaos.David Gilmour got his first Big Muff, a Ram’s Head model, around 1975 or early 1976, depending on which source you read, and it was used extensively on the recording of Animals. The Big Muff is still one of his main distortion or fuzz pedals to this day. Fuzz or Big Muff?

This is my first time posting and I am hoping you can help guide me in the right direction before I waste hard earned money on gear that will be counterproductive in achieving my long term goals. Intentionally simple, this muff evolution intends to provide the player with plenty of tonal options without an excessive number of controls. Inspired by the Ram’s Head Muff, the T4 is an attempt to “perfect” that sound with better components, a more present mid-range, and a sweeter-sounding tone control. The output volume is also increased to push your amp to the edge of breakup.

ARC Effects Big Green

David Gilmour’s Big Muff tones are based on mid range oriented Hiwatt amps and a volume that creates a lot of tube and speaker compression. This is crucial for getting that smooth violin like sustain. A Big Muff tend to sound either very harsh or muddy otherwise, which isn’t necessarily bad but not quite what you want for your Gilmour tones. I have played and tested each pedal in this guide, with guitars and amps that are typically associated with David Gilmour. The Electro Harmonix reissues I have a rare Japanese issue Maxon ST-01 Super Tube Screamer which has 2 of the JRC chips and a fourth tone control for mids-bass.

Peace, sorry to go on about one pedal, but Stu nailed the exact sound we asked him to emulate, and I don’t know how he did it, but it’s so very easy to dial in those DG Muff tones from 77-80. Shown above - First edition V7 Tall Font Green Russian Big Muffs with the die cast ridged-side box and aftermarket knobs. Muff on right is a transistion Bubble Font Green Russian, with second edition graphics on a first edition box. In 1978, the transistors were switched out for op-amp ICs. These Muffs were more consistent and standardized than their predecessors. This op-amp Muff was Billy Corgan’s favorite, and it defined the sound of Siamese Dream. The V5 revision included a tone bypass switch, which removes the eq section from the circuit, increasing the output level and changing the midrange response. The Russian Muffs are coveted by bassists and heavy players for their big, boosted low end. They are very smooth and have slightly less gain than the other Muffs. If you’re worried that a vintage Russian has some special unobtanium in it, don’t be. These circuits are identical to the 90s versions. Muff copies and originals have been going for 200 Euros online for ages now, and finally EHX have reissued this killer pedal for a sensible price ! This particular sound is what put the likes of Billy Corgan on the map with his band Smashing Pumpkins and is featured heavily throughout the album ‘Siamese Dream’. This version of the pedal now fetches a hefty sum on the 2nd hand market making it almost unaffordable for mere mortals.

After 1979 Version 6, Big Muff returned to production in New York again. The circuit designed by Bob Myer, it has some variants with slightly modified circuit, and the first edition circuit board was marked EC3003 and used four 2N5088 transistors, powered by 9V. EHX’s response to boutique builders expanding on their circuit is the highly tweakable Deluxe Big Muff. The 90s Russian Muff is the basis, but with a noise gate, parametric EQ, and bass boost switch, this pedal is a tonal powerhouse. The real selling point is the mid boost footswitch, which allows you to cut through any mix without the help of another pedal. Based on V11 from the Bass Big Muff circuit. It has slightly less gain and more mid than a Green Russian. In addition, there is a boost/cut switch and various other features. 2014 – Deluxe Big Muff Pi Of the board I also have an MXR ’76 Vintage Dyna Comp custom shop, TS808, Purple Fulltone ’70 fuzz and an MXR 1974 Distortion +The above article is very useful for us all trying to achieve somehow THE TONE FROM HEAVEN, but in my case i have in my possession a NYC made BIG MUFF (contemporary model) which i agree with what you say above it is quite buzzy, boomy, and somewhat choked sustain(long but choked).I also recently wanted to give a try on the “green” bass big muff which also after i tested it agree with what you say, but partially. Because it is quite better in terms of distortion/sustain compared to the NYC model muff for guitar, but it has an obvious volume drop compared to the NYC muff and less gain/sustain, at least in my opinion and my ears.I tested both muffs on a fender hot rod deluxe MK I amp, with MIJ Fender strat in combination with MXR DYNACOMP, and also the pedals alone each one.Do you think there is any solution with that negative of bass big muff so as to turn its disadvantages to my advantage and create the perfect muff(for me and my rig)or should I look again for something else, and what are your recommendations. The first version of Big Muff, common named "Triangle" because of the layout, it has three control knob: Volume, Sustain, Fuzz. It was designed in 1969 by Bob Myers and Mike Matthews. So, to put a stop to that and to satisfy the tone nerds out there (like me) EHX reissued this coveted pedal in 2017. The Electro Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff Pi 2017 Reissuerecreates the classic tones of the 70s and faithfully recreates all the subtle nuances of this classic pedal whilst taking up far less room on your pedal board! This pedal is one of Josh Scott’s greatest conceits: 6 beloved Muffs in one compact enclosure. Selectable on a dial are the V1 Triangle, V2 Ram’s Head, V3 IC Muff, V7 Civil War, V8 Russian, and a special JHS Muff with more midrange and less compression. Using all-analog circuitry, these aren’t just approximations of the original circuits, they are identical.
