About this deal

Medium sized hanging basket– approximately 1.5 litres per day in warm weather depending on the construction of the basket and the amount of plants in it. Assume in the region of 100 litres during the growing period The instructions below are for installing guttering on a pent shed… things get slightly more complicated (and expensive) if you’ve got an apex roof, where you’ll need to install guttering on three sides for maximum water channeling efficiency.

The position also needs to be near enough the water source, normally a guttering downpipe against a wall, to connect up the water diverter from the downpipe to the water butt. Follow the instructions which come with the water diverter to connect it up. APPEARANCE An open bed sized 2m by 2m with shallow rooted plants – approximately 3 litres per day. This can vary considerably depending on the type of ground, weather conditions and the plants being grown. Assume in the region of 200 litres during the growing period. Note that many shrubs and almost all trees need almost no manual watering. Having laid the mulch down initially, I top it up a little every year. I estimate that it removes the need for watering by about 80%. I not only use it on the allotment but also in my small garden with the same results. Now attach the downpipe to the drain outlet – you may need to include offset bends in the downpipe installation to direct water away from the shed and into a water butt. Ensure your guttering has been cut to the correct lengths, and if working with PVC guttering, apply lubricant to the cut ends of the guttering – this will allow the installation and joining of guttering sections much easier. We got our water butt from Aldi. He’s a handsome green chap – slim-line and stylish (at least as stylish as a water butt can be), with the capacity for 100 litres of finest rainwater. Ours came complete with base, tap assembly and a down-pipe diverter for those wishing to install directly to an existing drainpipe. I have the same problem with my allotment, I have no shed. But I do have a source of water, a stream. I decided to invest in a petrol generator and a water pump. That allows me to pump water from the stream to the many water butts on my allotment. Probably unlikely in your case but if you can collect water in one or more water butts near your house and then pump it via a hose to your garden, that would work. But there is a significant initial investment cost.

We’d recommend installing a 112.5-degree offset bend pointing outwards from the shed with a short section of downpipe at the bottom. This will ensure water runs away from the shed and does not pool next to the shed building. In some cases, there are no nearby established drain systems, in which case you’ll be looking to either direct your rainwater into a water butt or alternatively drain onto ground that is sloping away from the shed and any nearby buildings. On this project, I wanted to turn a corner with the down pipe to connect to the gutter down pipe on the other side of the shed.Step 12: You’ll undoubtedly need to jiggle the pipes around a bit, to get them to seat properly. Remove, trim and reassemble if necessary. If costs are important then it is often the case that buying online is not only more convenient, it is often cheaper. A trip to a DIY store may well work out more expensive compared to the delivery charges of a reputable online supplier, see here for example. FloPlast recommend the use of lubricant on all gutter seals for ease of fitting and improved performance.
