About this deal

The type of oranges used for Triple Sec is not defined. And the popular brands don't reveal all the varieties they are using. But a traditional variety most certainly part of many orange liqueurs is the Seville orange. Today, things haven't changed overly much. Triple Sec is still made by infusing a base spirit with flavors and essential oils from oranges. That base spirit often is derived from sugar beet because of its natural flavor. We cover a lot more about Triple Sec i n our What is Triple Sec article, but here’s a brief overview: Aldi Stores (Australia) collected top awards for its O’Donnells Christmas Pudding Country Cream, and O’Donnells Tiramisu. The Christmas Pudding bottling was “spot on Christmas-pudding-spice and raisin”, while the Tiramisu entry had a “beautiful nose – exactly like tiramisu”, leading to “chocolate, coffee, dessert” flavours on the palate. “Flipping delicious,” enthused Pamplin. Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier, the likely inventors of Triple Sec, opened their candy shop in Samour in 1834, and this company is still in business today.

When the Combiers' Triple Sec became such a big hit, they decided to devote their work 100% to liqueurs and turned their shop into the Combier Distillery. The Distillery in the French Loire Valley still sells its Triple Sec very successfully - along with many other liqueurs and Absinthe.

Review and Tasting

Cointreau and Triple Sec are orange liqueurs with several key differences (and one is also the name of the style of liqueur). Here’s a breakdown: Cointreau overview When it comes to finding an orange liqueur, look for something balanced, refreshing, and made with all-natural ingredients. Be sure to also consider the base spirit of the orange liqueur (cognac, brandy, etc.) as this can also play a major role in the liqueur’s final flavor profile. What it is:Triple Sec is any clear dry orange-flavored liqueur, including Cointreau. In most liquor stores, bottles labeled Triple Sec are lower in quality and more affordable than Cointreau.

Boann Distillery completed the Gold run with The Whistler Irish Cream Liqueur, which reminded the judges of “cream and wafer biscuits – a bit of Kitkat”. Two Silver medals were awarded. A broader flight of Coffee liqueurs were presented next. Two Gold-worthy winners stood out to the judges, the first being The Barista Coffee Liqueur by Wolf Lane Distillery. Pamplin said about this entry: “Lovely fresh coffee nose, super bright and fresh – I could heat this up and drink it as my morning coffee. Special to capture these fresh notes.” Triple sec liqueurs are usually based on neutral spirit made from sugar beet due to its neutrality when compared to the spirit made from grain, wine or sugar cane. Dried orange peel is steeped in the neutral alcohol and then redistilled. The resulting highly concentrated orange flavoured spirit is blended with more neutral spirit, water and powdered beet sugar.

To get the maximum out of the fruit, they get harvested when still green because that's when they are at their aromatic peak. Yet, when oranges ripen, the essential oils seep through the skin into the fruit flesh. And once it's inside the pulp, it's lost for the producers of Triple Sec. How to use Triple Sec? Seven Gold medals were also handed out in this round. Gold winners included two Creamy Creation (B2B) concepts: SL!M Dulce de Leche Cream Liqueur Concept with notes of “biscuit, coconut and light hazelnut”, and Dutch Silk Luscious Cream Liqueur Concept with its “nice texture and light milk chocolate on the palate”. Flavor:Triple Sec has a more straightforward flavor vs Cointreau: it’s very citrusy, almost like an orange-infused vodka. The quality ranges based on the brand. As the tasting moved to Honey, another Master medal was awarded. The top award went to Cazcabel Honey Tequila for its “good, rich waxy honey nose, good texture”. The judges said this was “delicious – so much honey”.

The Dutch East India Trading Companyproduced orange liqueur in the Caribbean. They called their liqueur, made by steeping dried orange peels, Curaçao- after the island. The most popular Triple Sec brands are Combier and Cointreau. Other popular brands are Grand Marnier, DeKuyper, and Bols. -With Grand Marnier being close but not the same as a Triple Sec. Two Gold medals were also awarded to Aldi’s Ballycastle Chocolate & Clementine Cream Liqueur, and Ballycastle Espresso Martini Cream Liqueur.

About the authors

Yes. While entry-level versions are recommended to be used as mixers, higher-end expressions are more than suitable for solo sipping. The spirit base for cordials is often neutral, but it certainly doesn't have to be. A robust spirit like whiskey, for example, can mix beautifully with other flavoring agents. Common flavors include fruits ranging from stone fruit to citrus and berries to nuts, as well as coffee and chocolate and even aromatic spices and seeds. Some liqueurs include a touch of cream to round out the other tasty elements. Naturally -to balance the bitterness- there's also quite some sugar involved: about 25gr per 100 ml, depending on the brand. Why is it named Triple Sec?
