About this deal

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy and lactation has not been established but in view of a possible association of foetal abnormalities with first trimester exposure to phenylephrine, the use of the product during pregnancy should be avoided. In addition, because phenylephrine may reduce placental perfusion, the product should not be used in patients with a history of preeclampsia. There are also many other cough remedies available that contain guaifenesin among their active ingredients.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over should take two to four 5ml spoonfuls (10ml to 40ml) four times a day as needed. The medicine comes as capsules and sachets for making hot drinks. Both are licensed for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose- galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not take this medicine. Women who are breastfeeding. It's not known if phenylephrine passes into breast milk, or its effect on a nursing infant. When taken by mouth, decongestants such as phenylephrine can also temporarily decrease the production of breast milk with just one or two doses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.Allergic reactions such as a rash or itching. Stop using this medicine and get medical advice if you think you've had an allergic reaction to it. Ingestion of 5 grams or more of paracetamol may lead to liver damage if the patient has risk factors (see below). Phenylephrine overdose is likely to result in: nervousness, headache, dizziness, insomnia, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, Mydriasis, acute angle closure glaucoma (most likely to occur in those with closed angle glaucoma), tachycardia, palpitations, allergic reactions (e.g. rash, urticarial and allergic dermatitis), dysuria and urinary retention (most likely to occur in those with bladder outlet obstruction, such as prostatic hypertrophy). There are limited data on the use of guaifenesin in pregnant women. Guaifenesin has been linked with an increased risk of neural tube defects in a small number of women with febrile illness in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Paracetamol is excreted in breast milk, but not in a clinically significant amount. Available published data do not contraindicate breast feeding. The rate of absorption of paracetamol may be increased by metoclopramide or domperidone and absorption may be reduced by cholestyramine. Drinking alcohol with this cough medicine is unlikely to cause you any problems, though clearly it's best to avoid drinking too much while you're unwell.Guaifenesin is a type of medicine called a cough expectorant. It's thought to work by increasing the volume of fluid produced in the airways. This helps to thin and loosen the mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. Lemisp cough for mucus cough and catarrh oral solution contains two active ingredients, guaifenesin, and cetylpyridinium chloride. It's best to avoid using Lemsip cough for chesty cough if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, as its safety has not been fully established (particularly in the first trimester of pregnancy).
