About this deal

If you’re buying a 1440p or 4K dash cam, think about a 64GB or 128GB card, and look for one with a longer warranty or one that’s designed for endurance in continual use. Cheap microSD cards can work well in some devices, but dash cams need something that’s built to last. Is there anything else worth looking out for?

We were happily surprised by the video quality. The cameras can record Full HD footage in both directions, capturing video that’s smooth, sharp and clear, matched by decent audio. The interior camera occasionally struggles in bright sunlight, but that’s a small criticism of otherwise impressive performance. The front camera can also go solo to shoot in even more detailed 1440p. Although the A139 competes well with other cameras in its price range, many alternatives offer additional technology, more user-friendly apps, and touchscreens for easier interaction. With a similar price, Viofo’s own A129 4K dual dash cam is a better option unless interior footage is a necessity. You want a simple solution: Nexar's app is home to a host of useful tools, but you’ll find better value elsewhere if you only want a basic cam for recording the road. Fitting time varies from vehicle to vehicle, but we'll book in a one-hour slot to ensure we've done the job properly. It usually takes less time than this, but we'd prefer to get things right and not have to rush. Many of our stores offer hot drinks, free wi-fi and comfy waiting areas, plus you can browse the rest of our ranges while you wait! Can I still unplug and store my dash cam when I park up? In our tests, the front camera’s footage was generally good enough in most scenarios. Viofo utilizes Sony Starvis image sensors, which perform well in low-light conditions. The lower resolution does compromise quality in subpar driving situations though, with fuzzy detail putting it behind the best 4K competitors. The interior and rear cameras offer a wide 170-degree field of view, and the interior camera is equipped with six LEDs for infrared capabilities. Even in the darkest driving conditions, visibility inside the car remained clear in our tests. Joining it is a tiny rear camera that records 2K video at 30fps. Like the forward unit, it covers a 140-degree field of view. That’s enough for the view front and rear, but rivals offer wider angles. Still, with a generous 128GB of internal storage, you get twice as much capacity as the previous Miofive 4K, with space for around 8 hours of record time before loop recording will start to overwrite the oldest clips. A built-in polarising filter on the front of the camera can be rotated to reduce glare from windscreens, while digital image stabilisation is another first for the dash cam market and helps smooth out those bumps and shakes caused by potholes and poor road surfaces. It's also important to note that while these are battery-powered, we've found they all have minuscule, sub-thirty-minute battery lives. That means they're going to require a power cable.

The factory fitted option is available only on the latest vehicles and cannot be activated successfully other than by Mercedes. Because cars with MBUX are ‘online’ any unauthorised activations will simply be ‘undone’ the next time the car connects to Mercedes. Video resolution is a key consideration when choosing a dash cam, as explained below. Most dash cams in 2023 can record footage in Full HD, which is generally enough to identify large details in a video clip. Sharper 4K dash cams tend to cost more, but capture video at a higher resolution. This makes it easier to pull out crucial details such as number plates, which mean 4K dash cams generally offer more reassurance from a safety perspective.Evidence that you were at fault – Incriminating footage is a two-way street. If there’s a dispute about who’s at fault for an accident, evidence from your dash cam could put the blame at your door. Some dash cams even have a parking mode, which starts recording as soon as an impact is detected. That increases your chances of tracing an individual who clips a wing mirror or scratches your Mercedes-Benz while it’s parked. Parking protection to record what’s going on around your car can be a bonus, provided you don’t use it in an area where the sight of your dash cam is more likely to get your car broken in to and the dash cam stolen. The Mio MiVue J60 is a really neat little device, with a compact body which manages to squeeze in a lot of technology.
