Me encanta leer libros orientados a un público infantil porque, de vez en cuando, me topo con joyitas de este tipo. No hubo, para mí, ni un solo momento de aburrimiento. Buena novela de aventuras prehistóricas y otra de las tantas sagas juveniles que intentaron venderse como la próxima "Harry Potter", pero que se terminaron quedando ahí, a medio camino. I particularly loved how Paver managed to include fantasy elements in her story, but yet always make them uncertain – part of the beliefs of the people, and taking place in dreams, or places where the mind itself was uncertain – so you can read this story as totally realistic if you want to, while still have this grand fantasy be a huge part of the lives of the characters and their plot. Michelle Paver’s Wolf Brother, the first in a series of children’s novels called The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, is a serious and gripping story. The writing is lovely and full of beautiful imagery, especially in the sections written from the wolf cub’s perspective. The story is original, suspenseful, and a little bit frightening. It promotes love, loyalty, and courage.

As his father (Fa) is dying, having been mawled by the bear, 12-year-old Torak makes him a promise: To journey into the frozen North, to the tallest mountain, home of the World Spirit, and plead for help. Only this Spirit is powerful enough to defeat such a demon. Torak must also offer sacrifices to the World Spirit, including his own heart's blood. (He wonders, "All of it??") No one has ever seen The World Spirit, nor traveled that far North and lived to tell about it. Torak is frightened and frequently tempted to break his promise, but he keeps his word (another moral of the story). Help comes from Renn, a resourceful girl with a quiver full of arrows and many insightful ideas. However, their journey is perilous. Horrible obstacles slow them down, including a disgusting old man, a Walker. I was reluctant to read it again only because I had first read it at a much younger age, and I felt that perhaps I had grown out of it. I could not have been any more wrong!
After several more years (the film business can be very slow) it began to look as if the film would be made in China. I was less than keen about this, because although I do like Chinese movies, Wolf Brother is not really a Chinese story!

Cuando me quise dar cuenta, ya habían pasado horas y me quedaban solo unos capítulos para terminar el libro. Me atrapó desde el principio y ni siquiera me había percatado. I’m really glad that you like my books! But I’m afraid that after I finished Wolf Bane, I just knew that I wouldn’t be writing any more books featuring Torak, Renn and Wolf. You see, I think nine books is a satisfying number, and as I’m really pleased with how Wolf Bane turned out, I prefer to end it there, rather than letting the series trail off into stories that aren’t quite as good, and might get repetitive. Also, I think I’ve developed the main characters – not only Wolf, Torak and Renn, but others, such as Dark – to the point where readers can imagine for themselves how their lives will turn out, and what might happen to them. As for the future, the books which I write after Wolf Bane are going to be ghost stories for grown-ups (maybe you’ll enjoy them when you’re a bit older). I’m sorry to disappoint you. But perhaps re-reading some of the Wolf Brother stories will help; I know that many readers enjoy doing this. Torak and Wolf, aided by Naiginn's father, Marupai and a young halfman (girl) named Shamik from the Narwhal clan, trace Naiginn and Renn to the Edge of the World, a volcanic opening where an opening to the demonic Otherworld can be found. Naiginn wants to use the power of the Edge of the World to allow Renn to break his curse, but the proximity of flames (counter to Naiginn's nature as an ice demon) weaken him. Renn escapes and Wolf summons the ancient spirits of the long-dead mammoths to hunt the demons, who fear them. Naiginn disappears and Torak, Renn, Wolf and Shamik (eager to escape the abuse she suffers from the Narwhals) return to the Forest. However, although they promise to tell each other the truth from that moment onwards, Renn does not tell Torak that she is still seeing visions of Seshru. The Soul-Eaters are a group of mages who united to combine their powers for the good of all people calling themselves the "Healers", but became corrupted and now wish to have power over everyone, using a crystal called the Fire Opal to make demons do their bidding. There were initially seven of mages in the group. Torak's late father, Fa, joined the group against his wife's advice, before rejecting their desire to take power. He summoned the seven together and shattered the Fire Opal into three pieces, causing a great fire that ripped across the forest. The Soul Eaters were scattered and Torak's father and mother went into exile. Torak's mother then gave birth to her son, and when she died shortly afterwards Fa continued his exile with his son for 12 years, before Fa's death at the beginning of the first novel. The seven mages were from the Otter Clan (the Walker/Narrander), Seal Clan (Tenris), Wolf Clan (Torak's Father), Bat Clan (Nef), Viper Clan (Seshru), Oak Clan (Thiazzi), and Eagle Owl Clan (Eostra).
