About this deal

Jill Baetiong recommends the book "for libraries with a strong interest in realistic fiction" in a review for School Library Journal and writes, "While this depiction of a boy with an autistic brother is evocative, some readers may be tired of another novel that views an autistic character through the perspective of a put-upon neurotypical sibling." [7] In a review for the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Quinita Balderson describes the book as "a gut-wrenching story of loss, but through Frank's growing bond with Max it's also one of gain, and readers will be deeply moved." Through the novel we see Tom and Zofia make many wishes and many readers have enjoyed the role origami plays in the story. Can you explain what drew you to including them within the book?

From author Katya Balen for children aged 9-12 years is one of the most beautiful stories that has been published this Autumn. The critics are describing it as a future classic and our young reviewer certainly agrees that it is an amazing book that has been published by Bloomsbury. Routh, Chris (Spring 2022). "Maggie and the Moonbird". The School Librarian. 70 (1): 44. ProQuest 2640408644October has a wonderful gift for spinning stories, and the run-on sentences that make up the book really capture the essence of her character; always moving, always interested, always looking. I admire her dedication to the woods and the charm it holds for her, though I have to admit it’s not a lifestyle I would personally choose! Still, Katya Balen describes them so vividly that they feel alive, and you can definitely see some of the appeal. Thursday 16 th June 2022: The winners of the UK’s longest running and best-loved book awards for children and young people, the Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards were announced today in a ceremony at The British Library. O’Connell, Alex (12 September 2020). "October, October by Katya Balen review — a future wild classic". The Times . Retrieved 15 June 2023. I am honoured and humbled to receive the Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal. Working on Long Way Down, interpreting Jason Reynolds’ beautiful text into images, was a dream project for me and its own reward, but I am thrilled to find that the graphic novel has resonated with readers as well. What I love about this book is how the author embeds stories within it. October is a born scavenger and her ability to seek treasure helps her to develop a vivid imagination for storytelling. The treasures that she seeks in the woods and on the riverbed hold untold stories of mischief and adventure that October helps to verbalise. It is her way of making sense of the world, along with the numerous books that she devours.

The perfect Autumn read - you can almost smell the damp leaves, crisp air and smoke from a distant bonfire ... It would be an ideal book to read alongside forest school sessions. - Primary Teacher Bookshelf KATYA: Before I started writing! My editor suggested it, and she was absolutely right to do so –seeing different sides of the same situation was so brilliant in terms of that understanding and empathy. a b c "Interview Katya Balen". British Council Germany. Archived from the original on 14 April 2023 . Retrieved 7 June 2023.

KATYA: I’m so excited too! It’s a bit of a change for me – there’s lots of magic and humour! But there are still some of my favourite themes of friendship and hope. Clem, Ash and Zara love mudlarking, but one day they find something strange and mysterious, and it needs to be returned to its rightful place before something terrible happens. There’s a big underwater adventure, a tiny snail in a hat, and a bonkers porpoise queen called Barbara. In my book, October is saved by stories. She is isolated, unusual, angry, friendless, lost, displaced, wild. But through stories she is able to connect to the world around her, and to the people around her. Stories make her who she is, but they also help her to see who other people are too. Stories make her a part of a new world, and keep her old life alive. They connect everything and everyone, and that’s what is so magical about stories. They build us, they anchor us, they let us be wild. They are everything.”
