About this deal

Osmo Top Oil does look good, but it doesn’t last, or protect your timber very well. For this reason, I tend to look at the alternatives. Two coats can be applied on wooden furniture, doors and joinery, but only one coat is recommended on wooden flooring – a clear top coat of Osmo Polyx®-Oil is required (approx. 24hrs after the first coat). In addition to its practical benefits, Polyx-Oil Effect is also easy to apply and brings out the natural beauty of the wood. Simply clean and sand the surface, apply the oil using a cloth or roller, and allow it to dry. The result is a beautiful, natural finish that will last for years to come.

New untreated wood in its original form has a light, pale character from its natural 'raw' appearance. Sanded wood also has this effect. Osmo Polyx Oil Raw is designed to retain this appearance by using a small amount of white pigments to counteract the darker 'damp-look' that develops after application of a clear oil or varnish finish.Application of top coat of clear Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original can be carried out once the first coat has dried. However, if the first coat was a coloured Osmo finish ( eg Polyx®-Oil Tint or Wood Wax Finish Transparent) wait approx. 24hrs before applying Osmo Polyx®-Oil Original clear top coat. Remove coarse dirt with a broom or a vacuum cleaner. To clean, add Osmo Wash and Care 8016 concentrate to mop water and clean the surface with a damp mop. To refresh and clean intensively or for stubborn stains, use Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner but ensuring you are applying a very thin coat. One of the key benefits of Polyx-Oil Effect is its durability. It is scratch and scuff resistant, making it perfect for high traffic areas in your home. It is also water and dirt repellent, making it easy to clean and maintain. With any project a test area is always recommended, this can help to rule out any possible issues and help you to decide on the right colour for your wood.

Osmo Polyx® oils are developed from natural oils and waxes to help and provide the most hardwearing and durable protection for wooden flooring and furniture. Oils need to penetrate the surface of the wood, once the wood is saturated and will not accept any more, excess oil drys on the surface and this is what marks easily. It is not only the type of wood that can effect this, also the method of application. Rollers application, for example, will apply more per area than cloth application, and so may not be ideal for hardwoods. So when you are happy with your test areas and ready to apply. Start by giving the tin a good stir before and periodically during application to prevent inconsistencies in the finish. Then it’s as simple as loading the brush dabbing off any excess and applying thinly, working with the grain and in manageable areas. Once applied remove any excess with a microfibre cloth and leave to dry. First Coat: Apply one thin coat with an Osmo Floor Brush or Osmo Floor Roller. Our rollers have a 4.5mm nap.Polyx®-Oil Raw is designed for sanded or raw wood only – not suitable for dark wood species, or smoked/ fumed wood. Applying the product too generously and insufficient ventilation lead to delays in drying time and the typical smell of oil. Based on renewable raw materials – soybean, sunflower, thistle oil, and carnauba and candelilla wax

The last thing to consider is sheen! Sheen refers to the amount of light the finish reflects from the surface. Contrary to popular belief this does not have any influence over durability.Osmo Polyx Oil is the original hard wax oil a combination of natural oils and waxes for use on almost any interior project. Hard Wax Oil is almost as hard as a varnish but easier to repair. All you need is a rag apply the oil over the affected areas without having to remove any previous finish. For Cork surfaces, due to their high absorbency please ensure that the wood finish is applied thinly. Longer drying times are to be taken into consideration (at least 24 hours). For cork surfaces, due to their high absorbency please ensure that the wood finish is applied especially thinly.

Yes, over-application of wood oil can be easily remedied by dampening a clean, lint free cloth in white spirit and wiping off the excess oil. Take care not to use too much white spirit and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. This will break down and remove the surplus oil from the surface of the wood.

The alternative will be to take a look at some of the coloured oils that will colour and protect like the Polyx you have already used. Bear in mind that when oils soak into a wood they will naturally highlight the tones of the wood and so for Pine this can be oranges or pinks, and this can happen even if the oil is pigmented. So again those test areas are vital. We want a light-coloured look that is as close to the original pine as possible. We also want to keep the character of the reclaimed wood surface as intact as possible - it's been lightly wire-brushed by machine but still has plenty of colour variation, holes, knots and bumps. These make us happy. We have spare boards we can use to test different combinations and scenarios if needed. This time we want to get it right - any help would be very much appreciated. Occasional Maintenance: If the oiled surface remains light in colour yet there is a reduction in water repellency, refresh the surface with Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 Clear Matt. Before using Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079, damp clean the surface using diluted Osmo Wash and Care, or alternatively Osmo Spray cleaner and allow to fully dry. For small areas Osmo Maintenance Oil 3079 can be applied thinly with a lint free cloth or white pad. Remove excess product. Allow for good ventilation while drying. A small trial is highly recommended first. White is recommended to be used as a stand-alone finish without a top coat of clear Polyx-Oil. Alternatively 3040 can be used as a top coat after application of Osmo Wood Wax Finish 3111 White, to preserve the desired intensity of white and reduce the effects of yellowing.
