About this deal

You might also consider monitoring your PC by using a ping from the RPi, say every 5 minutes and if there is no response repeat the ping and if still no response, run the reset sequence. Using the crontab in Linux is an easy way to run a script/program at set intervals. Now, loop one end of each wire through one of the terminals on the switch. Needle nose pliers can be used to make a nice, tight loop around the terminals. The first thing we want to do is to take a piece of wire, and strip off the coating on each end. Half an inch should be more than ample. I really want to do this without any extra hardware at all, just a Pi and the necessary connecting wires. Really hope some of the forum experts can lend a hand

As most of you probably know, you cannot simply plug in a PSU to the wall and turn it on. The PSU needs a connection to the motherboard to be told to turn on. When you press the power button on your case, it jumps the green wire to a ground, telling the PSU to turn on. When this “jump” is broken, the PSU shuts off. You don't need to wait 11 seconds for a reset, although a power off usually requires that the circuit is held low for more than 4 seconds). Next thing to do is to strip both pieces of wire on each end. Again, about half an inch should be enough. When your PC won’t turn on, it can be hard to know where to start fixing it. Modern PCs are complex machines, so it might not be immediately obvious where the problem originates. Once everything has been unplugged from the PSU, reseat the motherboard and CPU power cables, plug in your PC, and see if your system turns on, as indicated by fans spinning and the lights on your hardware illuminating. For testing, the script echoes messages to the screen. Once working, a) remove the general "All is well message" and b) redirect the restart message to a log file, for example:

The power switch you're referring to is for the power supply itself. This does not by itself turn on the computer; it merely allows the system to be powered on. JPWR1 (24 pins) is the main ATX power connector, while JPWR2 (8 pins) is the CPU power connector. These pins supply power to system components, and themselves do not turn the computer on. How did you achieve that? I use RDP, TeamViewer, and VPN pretty frequently and have run into the same thing. There's a guide on another forum that I'm in the process of starting up. Pi-powered webserver operating the power button via an opto-isolator. One of the most popular case mods we're asked about is how to change y our computer's Main Power Switch with a Military style Fighter Pilot switch. SPST 2 Pin ON/OFF Switch: You can toggle the handle manually for more than 50,000 cycles under normal use. Extra Wire - Only necessary if your harness doesn't have enough lead as-is. Match your gauge as best as possible. If you have tried all of the above and are still not seeing component status LEDs, you could be looking at a faulty PSU. I tested this using two RPi's on my home network and it seemed to work OK in terms of recognizing if the second RPi was live or not and showing the appropriate 'All is well' or 'Time for a restart message'. I wasn't able to test for a single missed ping response followed by a successful ping - but I'm sure you get the idea behind it. If you want to do something unique or different with your PC’s power switch, you need to understand what you’re working with so you can do it right. If you’re not getting a POST code, and you’ve already followed the steps above, then it’s worth making sure that your motherboard’s BIOS is current.
