About this deal

Once when asked if Peyton Place would stand the test of time, Grace said she didn’t think so, but as the structure of society has changed so has the way people now look at her work.

Allison’s new English teacher, Tomas Makris, a massive Greek from out of town. Makris doesn’t kowtow to Peyton Place mores. But he follows a strong, offbeat moral code of his own, which rather violently includes Alison’s mother. So this is a novel where you can encounter massively boned men. And when women lose their temper, this can happen : Grace made statements to interviewers like: “Everybody who lives in town knows that’s going on. There are no secrets, but they don’t want outsiders to know,” and “To a tourist these towns look as peaceful as a picture postcard, but if you go beneath that picture … all kinds of strange things crawl out.”Harmon threw his newspaper down on the floor and pounded the fist of one hand into the palm of the other. … “I’m not going to sweat blood at the mill to send him to college if this is the way he’s going to behave,” said Harmon. This story is actually about two things. 1) Grace Metalious, author of the racy 1956 book titled Peyton Place and 2) the true-life crime dubbed "The Sheep Pen Murder" from which Metalious took inspiration for her book.

She insisted Peyton Place was based on several places in New Hampshire – including Durham, where her husband attended the University of New Hampshire; Gilmanton, where he taught school; and Laconia, where her favorite bar was located. Peyton Place, The Book I knew that the Peyton Place book was based on a true story. However, I could never have guessed at just how incredible the story of the murder of Sylvester Roberts would be. His daughter eventually confessed to the crime. She was sentenced to a prison term, although after a length of time, she changed her plea from Not Guilty to Guilty. This plea was changed to protect her younger brother. Many felt that her brother had a hand in the murder, but from reading through the story, and drawing some conclusions on Barbara herself, I have no doubt that she was capable of the killing, and of course, of moving and hiding the body, without the aid of her brother. They lived on a farm, and from a young age, she was used to the hard manual labor. Her father and older brothers were often away from home as they were Merchant Marines. Metalious — the "Pandora in bluejeans" — was said by some to be a dreadful writer and a purveyor of filth, but her most famous book changed the publishing industry forever. With regard to her success, she said, "If I'm a lousy writer, then an awful lot of people have lousy taste," and as to the frankness of her work, she stated, "Even Tom Sawyer had a girlfriend, and to talk about adults without talking about their sex drives is like talking about a window without glass." Grace Metalious

This is the girl in the car just before she exposes one of the breasts causing the driver to crash. When Peyton Place by Grace Metalious was published in 1956, reviewers all over the country found the book scandalous yet hard to resist. The book was vilified in some quarters and banned in others, but that didn’t stop Americans from buying it in droves. This is really a shame, but fortunately the book has been re-evaluated by scholars and contemporary cultural critics. “ The Forgotten Legacy of Grace Metalious and Peyton Place” is an excellent place to begin. Peyton Placeis set in a small New England town where everyone knows everyone’s business. The inhabitants of Peyton Place seemed to have a lot more sex than other novels of the mid-fifties – more than the censors and many critics were prepared to put up with: the novel was banned in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1957 and in Rhode Island in 1959.
