About this deal

The Samsung Galaxy A54 runs the latest Android 13, with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 over the top which isn’t too intrusive. On the wireless side, the Galaxy A54 now supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC. You also get dual SIM support with 5G. Power and volume buttons are on the right edge although, unlike some handsets, the power button doesn’t double as a fingerprint reader. Instead, there’s one built into the screen, which is actually easiest to reach with your thumb (or your pointer finger on the other hand).

Unlike the camera bump that was found on the A53 range, Samsung has taken a design flourish from its flagship S23 handsets, the floating camera array, and has used this for the A54 range. The 6.4-inch AMOLED panel sports an ‘Infinity O’ design that, to you and I, simply means it has a single hole-punch camera cutout in the middle of the display. It’s the easiest way to tell the difference between it and the Galaxy A34 with its ‘Infinity U’ design. But unlike the A53, which had a 64MP primary shooter, the Galaxy A54 uses a 50MP sensor for its primary shooter. Besides that, everything else is the same, even the selfie camera. Battery life is also a little hit-and-miss. As long as you’re not using the phone too often it should last, but even a 5000mAh battery can’t always provide comfortable all-day battery life if you’re really putting the phone to the test. Combined with slow 25W charging, there’s still a lot to be done here. There’s a USB-C port for charging, but it’s limited to 25W so you miss out on the fastest fast charging. There’s no AC charger in the box, just a USB-C cable. More surprisingly, you miss out on wireless charging completely.

When it comes to photography, that 50 MP camera figure holds its own, delivering impressive detail even if the colours are a bit over-saturated by default. Outside during the day, photos look vivid but not over-processed, although the sky looks a little too blue and the trees a little too green. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G design is similar to the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, but its camera housing layout has changed a bit, and it looks much cleaner now. The easiest way to listen to audio on the Galaxy A54 is with wireless headphones. While they can certainly be more pricy than wired options, there are still plenty of wireless headphonesand wireless earbudsthat are similarly priced to wired options. All that said, my final impressions of the display are largely positive; it’s big enough to comfortably watch YouTube videos and movies on Netflix, colours are vibrant and punchy (if not a little too vibrant) and it’s easily legible in direct sunlight with a maximum brightness of 1000nits. I did miss elements like HDR10+ when watching Netflix though, features you can find on the likes of the Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus 5G and Google Pixel 6a. Camera Samsung wanted to go big on battery life with its A series with both the Galaxy A54 and its cheap Galaxy A34 sibling sporting the same 5,000mAh battery that’s found in the top-end flagship S23 Ultra, which is also bigger than that of the S23 and S23 Plus.Yes, the megapixel count has dropped from 64MP to 50MP with the Galaxy A54, but it’s worth noting that it’s a completely new camera with a larger sensor, larger pixel size (0.8um to 1um, or 2um if you pixel-bin) and an enhanced OIS. The camera setup, at least where the main lens is concerned, looks like a downgrade – on paper, that is. Samsung announced the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G today. The two new mid-range phones are full of surprises, with Samsung giving them a few higher-end features than usual, such as a more polished exterior, better audio during phone calls and video calls, improved Nightography and camera AI, and better displays, to name a few. The Samsung Galaxy A54 comes in four colours: White, Violet, Graphite, and Lime. My personal favourites are Lime and Violet! Features and performance

In low-light conditions, the results are also respectable but you’re left with a little noise in the shadows. GadgetGuy’s take When it comes to software, the phone ships with Samsung’s latest OneUI 5.1 based on Android 13. It’s very much the usual affair with Samsung’s signature UI design and heavy reliance on Samsung-branded apps, but with small new features like the ability to use certain Snapchat filters within the native Camera app thanks to a new partnership between the two companies. Battery life The Galaxy A54 has most features found on other phone cameras, such as portrait mode, slow-motion and super slow motion, hyper lapse, and more. Battery & Charging On paper that sounds pretty damn impressive, especially when coupled with Samsung’s claims of two days on a single charge, but that doesn’t always reflect real-world usage. The Galaxy A14 also supports a Bluetooth connection to wireless speakers and other audio players, such as smart TVs. The Galaxy A14 5G uses Bluetooth 5.2, the current industry standard. Flip the phone over and you’ll find a 32MP hole-punch selfie camera embedded into the top of the display that’s more than enough for selfies and video calls, but as you might expect, most photography should be left to the rear lenses. Performance The 5MP macro lens is the most niche of the collection, and something I don’t think many people will use more than once with a fixed focus that makes it difficult to capture anything of note. The fact that the macro shooting mode is found in the ‘More’ section of the camera app, rather than one of the main shooting modes, says a lot about how Samsung views it. New design changes aside, it’s very much business as usual for the Galaxy A54, sporting a power button and volume controls on the right, a USB-C port on the bottom and a combined SIM and microSD card tray. The latter is a nice touch, allowing you to expand storage by up to 1TB if required – I wish it was a feature of the flagship S23 range too. There are high hopes here as the Samsung Galaxy A53 did so well in the camera stakes, which means its successor has a lot to live up to. I didn’t manage to test the cameras as much as I would have liked in my short time with the Samsung Galaxy A54 but this is one powerful camera phone on paper at least.

Like the Galaxy A53, the A54 also records videos up to 4K at 30FPS and 1080P videos at 60FPS and 30FPS. It even has OIS and VDIS for smoother recording. The Galaxy A14 is another low-cost phone that does contain the 3.5mm headphone port if you’re seeking for a current Samsung smartphone that does. There are a few other options available for listening to audio content on the Galaxy A54, so it’s not the worst case scenario for wired headphone users who are considering or have recently acquired the device. Options for further audio listening on the Galaxy A54 That’s because most of said change is happening on the rear of the phone. The most immediately noticeable is that Samsung has ditched the contour camera housing present on last year’s model, instead opting for the same minimalistic design as the flagship Galaxy S23 line. The Samsung Galaxy A54 next to the Galaxy S23 With a great 6.4-inch display, sturdy premium build, and triple camera array, the Samsung Galaxy A54 certainly makes a great first impression for a mid-range handset. You can see how Samsung is working to unify the design language of the A and range-topping S series handsets. When it comes to performance, the device may not have the Snapdragon processor of the S23 but it was fast and responsive when we used the thing.

The rear camera array is strong, with Samsung opting for a: new 50MP f/1.8 OIS main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide f/2.2 and a 5MP f/2.4 Macro lens. Using wireless headphones is the simplest way to listen to audio on the Galaxy A54. There are still many wireless headphones and wireless earbuds that are priced similarly to wired options, even though they can be more expensive than cable options. Unlike the Galaxy A34 which has ditched Samsung’s own processor for a MediaTek equivalent, Samsung’s Galaxy A54 sports an upgraded Exynos 1380 chipset – the latest one in the company’s roster having been revealed just a few weeks prior to the phone’s announcement. The display is dynamic, dropping between 60Hz and 120Hz depending on what you’re doing, though you can also force a 120Hz refresh rate at the expense of battery life. It won’t drop down to a battery-saving 1Hz, but what mid-range phone does? That translates to pretty decent image capture in my experience – in well-lit conditions, anyway. Daylight images have plenty of detail and the colours pop, though they’re slightly more vivid than real life in true Samsung fashion. Still, it makes for vibrant shots most of the time, perfect for sharing on social media.
