As Darquesse, Valkyrie's personality undergoes a drastic, dark transformation. While still retaining her core behaviour and principals, as Darquesse is simply a darker version of her and not a separate entity, they are greatly twisted. She retains her witty, sarcastic personality, but it becomes cruel and malicious rather than playful. She relishes in causing and feeling pain and violence and is constantly seeking opponents who can actually challenge her. However, it has been noted that Darquesse is not inherently evil - simply cold, uncaring and above all curious in regards to her abilities and their limits. She is willing to ally herself with those who would usually be opposed to her, valuing self-preservation above all else. The Guardian then explains that if Skulduggery wins the fight against him he may activate the Meryyn Sigil and the one who wears the Sigil will be invincible until all the sand falls in the hourglass.

When Valkyrie is the child of the Faceless Ones, Skulduggery continues to support her in all endeavors. But at the same time, work with the resistance who are looking for ways to free Valkyrie from the influence of the Faceless Ones. Skulduggery firmly believes that the old Valkyrie is still alive somewhere, deliberately trying to cast doubt on Valkyrie's actions. After Valkyrie has spent nine months obsessively looking for Skulduggery's skull, a vampire called Caelan manages to set up a meeting for her with a man called Thames Chabon, who apparently has the skull. It is revealed that Wreath has indeed been teaching her Necromancy during her search for the skull, and she has placed her power into a ring. The trio go to Maybury's house, but no-one answered the door. When Geoffrey has only 15 minutes until he is going to be eaten, Skulduggery finds a door in Maybury's bedroom. Geoffrey notices the carpet is wet and soggy. Skulduggery calls out to Maybury through the door, but nothing happens. Geoffrey asks where the water is coming from, but Valkyrie says there is no water. Geoffrey sees a fish but he is the only one to experience it. Skulduggery looks for a way to open the door, without noticing it, he does. The go down a room with a dead Maybury sitting in the armchair. Geoffrey panics, but Skulduggery tries to calm him by telling a useless story.

The plan goes wrong, however, and they are arrested. Valkyrie is interrogated by Marr. Valkyrie manages to overpower her with her Necromancer ring and frees the other three. Tanith and Ghastly distract the incoming Cleavers while Fletcher teleports Valkyrie to Guild's office, where they finally retrieve the skull. They teleport to China's library and she joins the two. The three go to Aranmore Farm, where the portal is opened. Valkyrie insists that she goes in alone, causing Fletcher to kiss her. War is coming. To avert catastrophe, Skulduggery and Valkyrie are sent on a secret mission that takes them away from everything they know, to a forsaken land of magic and grim, unrelenting terror, with the last Dead Men, Tanith Low, and Dimensional Shunter "Luke Skywalker". In June 2011 Landy posted on his blog that he would be writing a short story about Skulduggery called The End of the World. [29] It was released in late February 2012 to coincide with World Book Day 2012. The Australian release of this novella came with an additional short story titled Just Another Friday Night. He initially possessed the standard powers of an Elemental sorcerer, however during his imprisonment in the Faceless Ones' dimension, Skulduggery had ample time to enhance his existing powers and become a stronger adversary. He can now also create streams of fire, fly, create solid walls of air and manipulate earth more than just as a defensive element. It's exciting, pacy, nicely handled and it's fun. There's nothing worthy about it, and it's all the better for that. And, I might add, it's self-contained. Landy may well revisit these characters – I sincerely hope he does – but it's a pleasingly rounded tale, which is refreshing in these days of endless open-ended books of never-ending series. The name "Cain" came to her mind when Skulduggery claimed she had a "penchant for raising cain," which means that she causes trouble. They follow him into the Caves, reaching the Sceptre about the same time as Serpine and fight him. During their fight, Skulduggery manages to set Serpine on fire, which would have killed him, but he had undergone a strange procedure, making him a Zombie with an enormous healing ability.
