About this deal

And I’m not the only one noticing. Literally everyone is looking at our table right now. So much for flying under the radar. I’m fully expecting to see a slightly taller version of the lanky seven-year-old who wore oversize T-shirts and had apparently never heard of a hairbrush, but that’s definitely not who just sat down next to me. Thanks,” Blake says, smiling at me, the gap in her teeth the only constant between the girl sitting in front of me and the girl that convinced me setting off sparklers indoors would scare Santa just enough to get us both ponies. For someone who just succeeded in blowing up her entire social life three weeks ago at junior prom, there is literally no worse place to be. Unfortunately, with said social life in shambles, that also means there wasn’t a single thing I could claim to be doing to get out of coming. I should’ve expected an emotional read from the coauthor of Five Feet Apart, but it wasn't too sad. I found this sweet, special, and so moving.

Me sacó un par de lagrimitas, dolía ver cómo una persona sufría y temía por amar. Nadie debería pasar por eso. El amor no debería tener generos. Sentí impotencia por Emily, porque escondía una parte importante de ella y creía que no sería aceptada. Any quotes from the book are taken from the advance copy and therefore may not be fully accurate or correctly compare to the final copy of the book. Emily perdió a su madre, desde entonces ella también dejó de vivir, la joven divertida y arriesgada desapareció para dejar a una persona aterrada, que siempre piensa de más las cosas.Matt would be a great friend to have in real life, he seems caring and supportive as well, and just seems like someone you would want to be friends with. Which I think is what this book does so well. You have Emily, desperate to make things work with her boyfriend, despite having called it off numerous times before now, because that’s what she assumes her mother would have wanted. It covers the pressures of heterosexuality, and the way it affects lesbians. If there was one thing about this book I liked less — and this is really only because of a general pattern in YA lit — it’s in its refusal to use the word lesbian. Emily is happy to refer to herself as gay, as is Blake, but neither use the word that actually describes their pattern of attraction. But hey, you’re probably tired of me ranting about this, so I’ll leave it at that. I love the author’s writing. I have had better experiences with the author’s books last year. However, I find this one a bit underwhelming despite a good storyline and well developed characters. It’s just bingo, Em,” he says to me as we zigzag our way to a free table and sit down across from each other. “Blake can take it if you don’t want it.” He looks down at the cards as he says it, though, refusing to meet my gaze.

The first number of the night,” Donna calls into the microphone, pausing as a group of elementary school kids three tables over start a drumroll. I catch a glimpse of Sue Patterson sitting in the corner just beside them, actively saying the rosary and sprinkling holy water over her set of four cards. Her character development is satisfying to watch and I loved seeing her come into her own. She learned a lot about herself and her sexuality and learned to accept everything about herself.

A couple more of those out of old Jim over there, and Donna’s gonna purse the lip filler right out of those babies,” my dad whispers to me, his dark brown eyes crinkling at the corners as he gives me one of his smirking grins. How about you play for me then★” he says as he shakes a bunch of red chips out of a white Styrofoam cup. I watch as they shower down in front of me, forming a small pile. “If that card happens to win, I keep the prize basket.”

Content Summary: This is an LGBTQ+ novel so two young women are attracted to each other. It talks about liking how her hand feels brushing up against her own and more but no real intimacy except for one kiss. They do go skinny dipping but that is before any feelings are declared. My biggest concern about the book would be the grief for sensitive readers. It is hopeful like I stated above, but there are quite a few instances of difficulty with the grief. There are two F words with some some other language and teens drink alcohol. The ‘Football Fan Fiesta’ basket, preferably,” he adds, giving me a big wink as Olivia’s mom, Donna Taylor, the head of the PTA and former prom queen (rumored to have literally bought the vote for both those elections) finally comes trotting onto the stage. Dang. Look at you, Clark,” a voice says from just over my right shoulder. “Still can’t count for shit.” I’m going to get Johnny’s and Blake’s cards for them,” my dad says, choosing to ignore my skepticism, as he pulls out his billfold. “You know how hard it is to find parking.” Blake was such a strong character that I really wanted to learn more about especially since her mom also died but she never got the chance to meet her. She was also such warm and welcoming that I actually had a hard time thinking of Blake with someone else other than Emily. Plus I have to admit that they are good for each other :) Blake was also really open and honest about everything which made me catch the feels for her.

Did we miss something on diversity?

I don’t, but this book has definitely made me want to put one together! I feel like a lot of my life goals are overarching and vague. Be a good parent. Lead with empathy. Always replace the toilet paper roll. But it would be cool to go to Paris and see the Grand Canyon and try to ride a unicycle. First, I feel the interaction between the characters needs to be more and more personal rather than wishing a lot and not making it happen. Second, the bonding and the chemistry with her father, her friend and best friend, her love interest seem surface level even though I could feel that they are close. The ending seems a little rushed considering most parts seemed dragged in between.
