About this deal

I replaced the long cage Tiagra 4700 with a shortcage, and went for the 105 10 speed (5700) which you would think would be a straight swap... It's not. Shimano claims (and I have no reason to doubt them) that the 11-speed 105 groupset is the most popular in the world. The 105 isn't the only model that has benefited from upgrades. Tiagra's cables now run beneath the bar tape, which is how the higher-end Shimano groupsets have it. If you need to make adjustments, on both levers this can be done using a screw-operated system. This is especially useful for those with a shorter reach or smaller hands are you are then able to move the levers to be closer to you.

Tiagra offers excellent value for money but 105 is certainly the better groupset and we’d recommend going for it if your funds allow because of the better brakes, the small weight saving and the upgrade to 11-speed. Thanks Disfunctional T...& RW, I'll keep an eye on the shifting. Seems OK on the bike stand but past experience tells me that 'on the road' is adifferent matter. It's a Shadow mech and the angle of the cable already looks a bit contorted when attached to below the pinch bolt... Tiagra is a really impressive groupset. To get this level of performance, finish and attention to detail on such an affordable groupset is hugely impressive. There is no need to upgrade the components at once. You can choose to upgrade to Ultegra or Dura-Ace as they need replacing. Plus, Dura-Ace and Ultegra are available with Di2 electronic shifting, and Dura-Ace, Ultegra and 105 are also available with hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano offers both hydraulic and cable discs for TiagraShould you decide that you want to start with the 105 version, you will arguably have more options. Or at least, upgrading can be done more easily. Both Shimano Tiagra and Shimano 105 use the same ratio of gear cable pull to rear derailleur movement, so you can fit a 105 derailleur in Tiagra system if you want to The 105 hydraulic STI units for disc brakes are 11-speed, as you'd expect, while the Tiagra are 10-speed. The new 105 R7000 STI units are considerably streamlined compared to both their predecessors and the Tiagra versions. The latest caliper brake design from Shimano is called SLR-EV Dual Pivot - this is available on 105, Ultegra, and Dura-Ace, so not Tiagra. A key difference between 105 and Tiagra is that the 105 is intended for 11-speed and the large chainring has teeth between 46 and 53.

please note, that the new rear derailleur geometry follows the design of the 11speed groupsets, and, it is for a longer cable pull with decreased derailleur actuation ratio. Therefore, the shifting is less sensitive to cable stretch and the extra friction of the concealed cable routing of the shifters.

SRAM Rival eTap AXS groupset

If you go for 105, on the other hand, you could swap to Ultegra or Dura-Ace gradually as each component wears out. That might be attractive, but only if you’re realistically likely to do this. Tiagra is offered with both a double chainset (there are two chainrings) and a triple chainset (there are three chainrings) whereas 105 comes as a double only. As you can see there isn't a huge amount of difference in the weight of these two so the biggest difference is that the Tiagra brake levers run a 10-speed system whereas 105 is an 11-speed. The changes that Shimano has made mean this groupset is now much more similiar to the company's more expensive groupsets in appearance, ergonomics and functionality. If you're upgrading from previous Tiagra or a lower level groupset, you'll really appreciate the improvements. Shifting up When it comes to rear derailleurs, this is where the 105 groupset differs from the Tiagra. The 105 R7000 is very different from the previous 105 models. It stems from the Ultegra R8000 design from the previous year.

When you look at these derailleurs, they are different in appearance. The 105 R7000 groupset uses Shimano's "compact toggle design". I'm not sure. I've bodged plenty things to an adequate standard before - if you're buying relatively expensive new kit it's nice if it works sweetly! Keep the mech but change the cassette (and chain) for 11spd items?

Front derailleur

The fact that the 105 groupset is 11-speed is what sets it apart from Shimano Tiagra, that being only 10-speed. nb: the new sora r3000 actually is still with the old actuation ratio, therefore, you can use older shimano rear derailleurs with the new concealed-cable sora shifters without any issues. so I do not even get, why did you even try to do such a mix. A 11spd 5800 derailleur works well with 4700 shifters, but it is well known, that older 10spd components are with a different ratio (shorter cable pull-larger actuation ratio of the derailleur) is also available in a direct mount option (you need to have a compatible frame and fork) where the brake arms bolt straight on to the frame/fork rather than via a central bolt. There is no Tiagra direct mount option. Disc brakes If you're buying a new road bike with the latest Tiagra, there's no doubt about it, you're getting a better bike for your money. Verdict
