About this deal

This keeps plants happier and healthier, especially during those long, dry summer months in some areas. Besides the application benefits of mulch, dyed mulches, in general, are usually made from recycled wood products, eliminating unneeded waste in the environment. There is no need to remove mulches to apply fertilisers. Fertilisers are spread over mulches in late winter and are washed down to plant roots by rain. This is great stuff to work with in all honesty. Usually, when I first receive it – it’s partially decomposed (the stuff is quite hot when I first have it delivered) and fully decomposes in about a year to 18 months. Earthworms and other aerating insects LOVE this stuff. I find that it keeps my pH stable and provides a good environment for beneficial bacteria to grow and decomposers such as mushrooms and fungi. If you’ve got little ones that love to play outdoors, play bark offers a more durable surface that doesn’t suffer from wear and tear. Our range includes playground bark that’s ideal for activity areas and the bottom of your garden slide where a softer, more cushioned surface comes in handy. For larger areas, our range of garden bark includes cost-effective bulk bags that can cover huge spaces. When trying to maintain landscaping and keep weeds at bay, there are many mulch options to consider. Mulch can help to significantly reduce the number of weeds in a garden. If there are already weed seeds in the soil, adding a layer of mulch can prevent many seeds from receiving the sunlight they need to grow. A layer of mulch can also prevent seeds that may be carried by the wind from reaching the soil and taking root, reducing the overall number of weeds in a garden.Pests such as slugs, snails, and termites may find refuge in the mulch, potentially causing damage to plants or becoming a nuisance. The best way to mitigate these issues is to conduct regular inspections and use appropriate pest management practices. There are many different types of wood mulch such as bark chips, wood chips, hardwood, pine, wood shavings, and more. Like other organic mulches, the various types of wood mulch decompose, providing nutrients to the soil and improving soil structure. They can also reduce weed growth.

Use this customized mulch for informal planting. The chips are going to give the same aesthetic effect as gravel. Your flower beds will bloom and thrive under this much-desirable spotlight. 4. Make Your Small Flowers More ProminentThe dark mulch acts as a visual guide, leading you and your guests through your outdoor space with style and sophistication. It’s like creating a pathway to elegance and charm. 14. Accentuate Garden Structures: When installing fresh mulch, allow for compaction. Initially spread 3-4 inches of loose mulch across beds, then water thoroughly. Bark Mulch: Bark mulch is a type of organic mulch made from shredded tree bark. It has a dark, charcoal-like color that can add depth and contrast to any landscaping project. Bark mulch also helps to retain moisture in the soil while providing excellent weed control, making it an ideal choice for flower beds and vegetable gardens. Depending on the quality of the material there is a possibility of introducing weeds, pests and diseases to the garden and, with woodchips there is a slight risk of introducing honey fungus. Remove weeds: Begin by removing any weeds from the area where you plan to apply the mulch. This can be done by hand or with a herbicide.

Depending on the source, the wood may have been chemically treated with creosote or chromated copper arsenate (CCA). CCA has been banned since the early 2000s, but it’s still present in any wood that was treated before then, especially in wood sourced from construction and demolitions. AVOID USING when sourced from construction and demolitions. If you decide to go with dyed bark mulch, go for brands certified by the Mulch & Soil Council. Like all organic mulches, wood mulch needs to be replenished more frequently than synthetic mulches. It can also contain contaminants, particularly if dyed, and can result in plastic waste when bagged bark is bought in bulk. Organic mulch is made to break down and provide additional nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. This means that as your mulch ages, it might not function very well as a mulch. If you scoop up a handful of mulch, and it looks and feels more like soil, it is time to replace the mulch. Simply work it into the soil to add nutrients, and replace it with a new layer. Of course, the cost of natural mulch can range in price drastically depending on what type of wood it’s made from.

The benefits of mulch

It’s like giving your garden structures the attention they deserve, turning them into works of art. 15. Mulch Around Edible Gardens: Synthetic mulches include materials like plastic sheets, rubber, dyed mulches, and more. Unlike organic mulches, synthetic mulches are not biodegradable. They tend to be more convenient and durable and don't need to be replaced as frequently as organic mulches. However, since they do not biodegrade (or do so very slowly), they are less sustainable (environmentally), and also do not provide the soil with nutrients or organic matter like organic mulches do. In some cases, synthetic mulches may even leach harmful chemicals to the surrounding area, which can be detrimental to your garden and the environment. However, synthetic mulches do have their place and can result in benefits similar to those provided by organic mulches (heat retention, moisture retention, etc.) while also often being readily available and easier to maintain. Below are a few examples of synthetic mulches.

A dyed mulch is a type of organic mulch that is colored using synthetic additives for aesthetic purposes. Thus, they have some of the advantages of organic mulches in that they can decompose and provide the soil with nutrients, with the added benefit of being available in various colors.

According to the University of Massachusetts Amherst Center for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment, “Besides the benefits of recycling waste wood materials, the reason why these wood materials are used for colored mulches is that they are very dry and readily absorb or adsorb coloring agents.” Water the mulch: After applying the new mulch, be sure to water it well to help it settle into place and begin providing the desired benefits. It is important to keep the mulch consistently moist, but not waterlogged, to prevent it from drying out or washing away. As a result of the insulation it provides, mulch also affects the moisture retention of the soil. It can help reduce evaporation from heat and wind which improves moisture retention and can reduce the frequency and volume of watering necessary for plants to thrive. Prepare the soil: Once the old mulch has been removed, loosen the soil and remove any weeds as you would when preparing the soil for new mulch.
