About this deal

Medium to bright filtered or indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight as it’ll scorch and discolor the leaves. Because Calathea roseopicta naturally grows in rainforests, it won’t respond well to low temperatures. The grow pot height is standardised (normally 12cm or 19cm) and shown on the size option for each hydroculture plant. Ensure the external height of your decorative pot is at least 2-3cm higher than the grow pot height of the hydroculture plant. Many people have a love-hate relationship with Calathea. Also known as prayer plants, they have a reputation for being fussy and hard to care for, which is why the genus is not usually recommended for beginners. However, once you figure out what works for your plants, they can be an absolute delight to have in your home.

The ideal spot for a prayer plant will receive medium to bright indirect light. Calathea can handle low light, but increased light can help maintain the vivid colors and patterns on the foliage. Direct sunlight can be damaging and may cause colors to fade. Water Fungus Gnats: The adults generate clouds of tiny little pests, but the larvae may eat through your plant’s roots, making these small bugs more of an irritation than anything else. Spider mite eggs on leaves (Source: L. Buss, UF) Solutions Calathea plants have high water requirements. Thoroughly water these indoor plants when the top inch of the soil is dry. Calathea houseplants do best in well-draining soil and in containers with drainage. While calathea are certainly thirsty houseplants, they still like to dry out a bit between watering.

Light

Most Calathea varieties are sensitive to fertilizer salts that can burn the leaf tips. Don’t overfertilize and be sure to flush the soil periodically to remove any salt buildup. However, because the leaves of calathea move up and down in response to light, make sure that you’re not mistaking natural movement for a need for water. Calathea roseopicta has a bunching habit and plants average around 20 inches tall and wide. In addition, there’s numerous cultivars available with differing leaf colors and patterns. Is Calathea toxic to Cats? No, all Calathea varieties are non-toxic to humans and pets. Keep in mind, overeating any plant will cause nausea or vomiting. And, we should also be mindful to consider a few natural or cultural techniques before resorting to chemicals. Solutions

While rare, bacterial blight can affect your calathea, most notably bacterial wilt, and pseudomonas blight. Care: Keep the soil moist, water when the first inch of soil gets dry. Do not let the plant sit in water. Use only half of the recommended strength of fertilizer or opt for a slow-release fertilizer. Maintain a high humidity level around the plant to keep the leaves healthy. If you keep your Calathea under direct sunlight, the leaves will begin to sear, and holes will appear in the foliage. Fertilizing your calathea can help promote new growth and even blooms depending on the variety. A complete liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength is a good option. When re-potting, you can also amend the soil with seaweed or fish emulsion, or worm castings. Calathea will benefit from being fertilized during the growing season. These indoor plants do not need to be fertilized during the colder months when the plant is dormant. Pet Friend or Foe If there is one thing Calatheas are not fussy about, it is the pests associated with them. Since they require relatively high humidity, pests such as spider mites, mealy bugs, and aphids tend to steer clear from your White star. After looking at the plant, one thought might be lingering in your mind; these plants are captivating to look at, so they must be difficult to care for. The type of water used can make a difference when it comes to watering calathea. Tap water may contain different minerals or compounds that can be damaging to the leaves. Brown edges along the leaves can be an indication that the water is high in salt or contains chlorine, chloramine, bromide, or fluoride. It may be best to water the plant using filtered or distilled water, or water collected from a dehumidifier if you suspect tap water is not suitable for your calathea. Soil

Note: Liners are "squashy" so they can be pushed through the opening to expand and fit closer to the pot wall once inside. Liners can also be cut down to size with scissors for a neater fit if they bulge inwards slightly at the top. Pests can cause your Calathes’ leaves to become brown as they seek to destroy them and drain the nutrients. Keep away from cold and drafty locations and provide bright filtered light. Too little light results in leggy plants and too much direct sunlight scorches the foliage, and it loses its color. The drainage hole at the bottom of the container is the most crucial feature needed to grow this plant. This Calathea is sure to add a tropical and colorful feeling with its broad leathery and glossy leaves. They sport dark green on top with feathery pinstripes tinged in rose and cream, with the undersides dark purple. The leaves are attached to purple stems and grows to around 2 feet tall and about half as wide at maturity. You can keep it happy and healthy by caring for it as you would its mother, Calathea ornata. Expert Calathea Care Tips Do not water with chlorinated water or leaf spotting can occur. Use rain water, bottled or distilled water, or allow your tap water to sit out overnight before using to water or mist for humidity.

A balanced indoor plant fertilizer with a 10-10-10 NPK ratio (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) is recommended to apply during its growing period. Important: The opening measurement of the decorative pot is the size of the access hole for inserting the plant's grow pot as well as an indication of the minimum liner size needed. It is not the same as the external diameter of the pot which is the overall outer size of the pot. Please note all measurements are approximate and can vary slightly due to the handmade nature of our pots. Read the label carefully and apply the fertilizer according to the instructions to avoid over-fertilizing.

Too little light. If the leaves on your plant appear faded and it’s in a low light spot, that might be it. Unfortunately you have to accept that all plants need light and they can’t be in a dark spot in the home. Slowly acclimate your Calathea to a higher light location.
