About this deal

Side effects from medicine. If you begin to hear things once you start a new medicine or your doctor puts you on a higher dose of something you already take, that change could be the reason. It most often affects older adults and gets more likely the more medicines you take. The idea is that you are going to describe what is in the box and the children are going to guess. But to make it much more exciting, someone (or something) is going to phone you up. It could be the Big Bad Wolf. It could be a witch or an alien. Maybe a character from a story you were doing at the time would be a good choice. But there are some activities and games that might help simulate what it’s like to be deaf or hard of hearing.

Medscape: “Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Clinical Presentation,” “Myxedema Coma or Crisis,” “Childhood Migraine Variants Clinical Presentation.”

Hasbro has decided to bring this game to the masses by releasing “Hearing Things,” boxing up the concept and providing phrases so you can play straight out the box! What do you get? Split the players into two teams and decide who is going first. One player starts by putting the headphones on and presses the button on the side to initiate the off-putting sound effect (it sounds like you are in a room of very loud people talking all at once!). This is kind of a funny one as I legitimately still don’t know if I’m hearing anything similar to what hearing people hear when I have my hearing aids on. This simulator does a pretty accurate job of depicting what it’s like to hear these noises when I don’t have my hearing aids on. I have severe hearing loss, so most of these things come across in vibrations more than actual noise when I’m aid-less. Mental illness is one of the more common causes of auditory hallucinations, but there are a lot of other reasons, including:

This game is my gold mine. I rely a lot on lip reading, so this is where I excel. A lot of people, hearing and deaf/hard of hearing, do not rely on lipreading for communication, so this game challenges you to really pay attention to the way people speak and reinforces the importance of enunciating. I consider this almost the inverse of telephone. It’s frustrating but so satisfying when you do get it right! Phonak Hearing Loss Simulator The children are all sailors on the boat. There are different commands that you demonstrate to them, and actions they will do when they hear each one. These are: Alcohol . Heavy drinking can cause you to see things that aren’t there. You might hear things, too, both as you drink or when you quit after you’ve been drinking for many years. This is a very simple concept and one that is open to lots of creativity and suggestions from children. Put out lots of rubber spots in a random array all over the floor. The spots should all be at least two meters apart, and you need at least as many spots as children. The spots are the rabbit holes. The next child is going to start their sentence ‘And then…’ and in such a way they will carry on the story. (For example, ‘And then a witch flew down.’) Most of these are games where I personally struggled or excelled as a result of being deaf. Therefore I’m hoping these games might simulate what it’s like to be deaf or hard of hearing and give people some insight into what we deal with day in and day out. Telephone Create a combination of two or more features. For example, ‘Swap places if you are a boy and you like apples.’ You’d think it’d be easier to describe to people what it’s like being deaf or hard of hearing, but it’s similar one of those “you had to be there” situations. Unless you’ve actually experienced it yourself, there’s really no true way to know what it’s like to not hear everything.

Who knows what's going to come out of your teammate's mouth? The Hearing things game, Hasbros twist on the online viral ""Whisper Challenge"" sensation has you guessing what you think your teammate is saying by reading their lips. One player puts on the speech-cancelling electronic headphones and the other player says the random phrase shown on the card such as, ""Pigeons like to cuddle"" or ""Youre the champ of the camp "". The game headphones limit the players ability to hear what their teammate is saying out loud, and the player has to figure it out to earn the card. The player with the most cards wins. The game comes with speech-cancelling electronic game headphones, and 150 cards with 600 phrases. You will need at least one instrument, and three different instruments if you are going to do the harder version of the game. This depends on what’s causing you to hear things. Sometimes, once you and your doctor solve that problem, the hallucinations go away, or at least may not happen as much.

Intense stress . Serious stress, as you might have after going through something traumatic, can cause hallucinations. It’s especially common to hear the voice of a loved one after their recent death. The children are going to move in different ways all around the space this time, trying to stay a reasonable distance away from others if they can. They are in shark-infested waters so watch out!

One child stands in one box each to start with. Simply shout a number – e.g. ‘7’. Everyone who is standing in a circle or square with a 7 written in it is going to run and find a new box. The big rule is that you can’t run to another box with a 7 in it – you’ve got to find a new number. You need at least a couple of instruments for this one, that will be played by either one adult or possibly even two.
