About this deal

Making your own DIY Pon can be a great choice if you need larger quantities or want to reserve some to the side for the future. If you only need a smaller quantity, it may be more cost-effective to try out Lechuza-Pon brand substrate or someone else’s DIY Pon mix available on Etsy etc. before investing. Lechuza says pon does not have to be rinsed, but some growers like to flush/rinse pon to remove smaller particles that can impede drainage. What is this so-called 'shower method' you keep referring to? Bring your plant to a sink or shower and let water run through the pot until it runs out the bottom. Saturating all of the media heavily. Allow pot to stop dripping in the sink/shower and return to shelf.

Other Lechuza pots do not have this and you either take the inner pot or net pot out and pour water into the reservoir or you water them like you would water any other pot. Lechuza say you don't have to worry about soil remaining on roots when you transition plants to Pon, however I'd still recommend doing the best job you can to remove excess soil if you're going for the 100% Pon method. If going for the 25% or 50% methods (more about all 3 was covered further up), there's no need to remove soil or potting mix (or fern fibre, spagmoss or your substrate of choice), from around the roots. Deltini is great for climbers such as Monstera Adansonii, Pothos, and climbing Philodendron that do not get too big. Leca tends to require a lot of prep ( here's how I do it). I can only speak for Lechuza-Pon, but from my experience, Pon requires far less if not no prep at all. In fact you'll often see it recommended to pot up in non-rinsed, dry Pon (that's because Pon holds water differently than Leca).

Buy a Lechuza Planter such as a Deltini (Climbers), Delta (Crawlers), Classico, Cube, or Cubico (bigger plants).Du skal vande lige så ofte som du plejer, som hvis din plante stod i jord. Planter i semihydrokultur Planters get very dirty after a while as debris and roots are accumulating. The roots attach to the inside of the planter and grow into the water reservoir Buy a bag of Lechuza Pon Substrate as you will need it further down the road. There is some Pon already included in the planters but it might not be sufficient or you might want more soon. Next steps is watering your newly potted plant. If you are using self-watering pots like the Lechuz ones I have, don’t fill the reservoir in the first couple of weeks. Just water like you’d normally do. This is because the roots of the plant need to grow into the reservoir. You can tell when it’s time to water your plant because the pon will slightly change the colour but you can also test the moisture in the pon with your fingers just like you’d do with soil.

Converting a plant to another media can be stressful so it is not the best idea to transfer a plant that is already suffering. I always thoroughly water the plant in it's current media BEFORE transferring it. In addition, perlite is much much lighter than Lechuza Pon and it is neutral and doesn’t contain any nutrients. In a way, yes. Although it does depend on your watering method. If you top water (the 'shower method'), then it's less important as top watering helps wash away excess fertiliser salts. If you combine your fertiliser with seaweed the seaweed will help 'fill in the blanks' for what your fertiliser doesn't provide (as most fertiliser are not complete). Plant Runner is one that does this for you, combining an NPK fertiliser with organic seaweed all-in-one. However what most people do - same as with Leca - is shift to a fertiliser formulated for hydro and semi-hydro. Pon holds water better than Leca, so after the initial drench when repotting, step away from the watering jug! If your plant is really going through the wars and desperate for water before 2 weeks is up (normally for a plant that must be kept moist and can't handle drying out), you may need to water before 2 weeks is up.Since getting a puppy, I have been putting off plant care and repotting for a while. Now that my shiba, Yuki, can finally chill, I got some repotting done! In this blog post, I will explain what Lechuza Pon is, discuss its pros and cons, and how I convert my plants to pon. The phenomenon seen here is known as false vivipary: let’s break that down! Vivipary is where seeds sprout while still attached to the fruit or seedhead they came from - you may remember seeing a picture of a strawberry covered in sprouting seeds for instance. The nutrients that are present in the form of slow-release fertilizer in the substrate release micro and macronutrients to the plants all the time. This will not be 100% the same asLechuza Pon Soil as theLechuza Granulate also contains fertilizer. The multiple filtering in production reduces the fine particles in the substrate to a minimum. This prevents a silting up in the root area and sustains a long-lasting capillarity.

You will need space for a large storage tote that will hold your DIY Pon mix (50-60qt size, usually used for storing outdoor gear or holiday decor items) as well as elbow room to work when you’re rinsing the ingredients. If you live in a small apartment or tiny home, this may present a challenge. After a couple of weeks water directly into the water reservoir by removing the pot or by using the opening some of the planters have I suppose that Lechuza Pon was originally developed for orchids and then later on people realized it can be used for other plants as well.Jane: I'm so used to growing in soil. What would you say to me, as somebody who's a soil grower, about switching over? Where would you recommend that I start? Like it sounds, the shower method just means a thorough top-water, really flushing the pon and roots thoroughly with water, letting excess freely drain out. This method needs a pot with drainage holes. This method is also used with Leca, especially at first to help a plant adjust to it. You want the Pon to be evenly moist throughout after watering (Pon slightly changes colour as it dries out). The root development is great and the orchids are thanking it by producing multiple flower stalks and flowers several times a year.
