About this deal

An issue that could stop programmes being set to record that are on now on a service that does not broadcast 24/7 (e.g. BBC FOUR). The recording could only be scheduled after changing to a service on the same multiplex. And now – the T3-R, which combines ALL these features in one very affordable device. So at this point, if you’re looking for a Freeview box, I would say the real decision is whether you want something cheap and basic – like the T1 – or a full-featured box that will upgrade your Freeview experience, like the T3-R.

After an alternative to the Sky Q box above? Your best bet is Virgin Media’s Virgin TV 360 box because it offers many of the same premium channels and recording capabilities. The key thing to note is that if you want the Virgin Media TV service, you need to have its broadband too. Once you do, you’re getting a competitive Sky rival that delivers a huge selection of premium channels (including Sky Showcase, MTV and Comedy Central), the ability to record six programmes simultaneously while watching a seventh, and the same 1TB of storage that the standard Sky box includes. Pause and rewind live TV, record two programmes at once and record entire series at the touch of a button. The 1TB hard drive holds up to 600 hours of recordings, smartly organised into categories and series. The Manhattan TV Freeview boxes are among the best in the market these days (with the Manhattan T3-R being our Editor’s Choice) – and soon they will get even better, with new upcoming features – such as support for a 3rd simultaneous channel and HDMI-CEC. Press the “Recordings” button on your remote, and you instantly get into your very own VOD library of all the programmes, series and movies you’ve recorded (and it even knows to categorise them like that). The T2•R can also be manually set to a resolution in the Picture & Sound section of the Settings menu. This could cause an issue if you set a resolution (e.g. 1080p), then move the T2•R to another TV that doesn't support that resolution. And while modern TVs will connect to Freeview directly, they’re not always easy to use. Sometimes the TV Guide is hidden behind a screen of apps and it can be impossible to find the channels you actually want to watch. And there’s no guarantee the manufacturer will keep updating them - so you might wake up one day and find the smart TV you bought is suddenly dumb.

Because of their determination to get this sorted, "it's our top priority to understand & resolve as reliable timers are a must for a PVR", I'm willing to persevere with the box for now . The T3-R is the Manhatten flagship product and has had the most attention from support even software for some to log the faults. With T2-R its advice is reformat or factory reset which doesn't change anything. Sometimes at random it fails to record maybe once or twice a week - an irritation if you are missing an episode from a series but streaming services can come to the rescue. The usual features you might be used to on your Sky/BT/Virgin Media box – such as pausing live TV for up to two hours, initiating series links and making one-touch recordings – work like a breeze.So... The T2-R has some bugs and it seems to me that is is only a few software upgrades away from being very good. It isn't a bad PVR - most of the time it is good but then every 2-3 weeks you get a freeze sometimes twice a night. Unplug and restart, recordings restart and you loose a minute.

Manhattan menus can now be used when using interactive services with video, like 211 Ketchup TV and 265 Planet Knowledge. Previously you needed to exit the service or change the channel first. (1.09) The twin-tuner system allows you to watch one channel while recording another, providing you with the freedom to manage your viewing schedule effectively. The device offers multiple connectivity options, including HDMI, Ethernet, and USB ports, making it simple to connect to your TV and other devices.

Win: The device comes with an intuitive electronic program guide (EPG) that provides detailed information about upcoming TV shows, making it easy for you to plan and schedule your recordings. The EPG ensures you stay up to date with your favourite programs.

When we compare free-to-view TV services Freeview Play, YouView and the Freesat, — the Freesat satellite television service has the advantage of offering more channels, including HD ones. The key difference, though, is that Freesat is delivered through satellite, not an aerial. You seem to have made up your mind and I know how that feels when you are disappointed with a shiny new gadget. At this price you don't get luxuries like app control; use the electronic programme guide (EPG) to select channels for viewing or recording instead. This can also 'remind' you when a programme is due to start and supports series-linking. If there's a schedule clash, you're invited to set recordings on the offending channel individually as
