Hello Ian! First thank you for your blog, I’m less than a year into the hobby, and your blog is one of the few knowledgeable sources that helped me a lot. However, I can recommend a couple of methods that I’ve successfully used to completely eradicate the pest from my tanks. Have you tried anything that is not safe for shrimps, but in super low doses? That might kill the shell bugs but not the shrimp.Their voracious and non-selective appetite for living snails, as well as carrion, will work really well for you. In addition, they are actually quite a good cleanup crew as well. Most carnivorous freshwater fish would eat Planaria worms and control their population if food in your tank is scarce. Anyway, I’ve found reports of shrimp keepers who claim that Planaria leave a toxic trail behind them. Some types of planaria feed on plant detritus and biofilm, making live plants the perfect source of food. When you add the plants to your tank without taking extra sanitary measures, you may inadvertently introduce the worm and spark a significant problem.

Most planarians are free roaming and scrape a living through grazing, although some can be predatory or parasitic. I introduced physa (bladder snails) into my tank by accident with a single pot of java fern which at that point had aquasoil cycling, a filter and heater running and nothing else! They seemed to appear overnight and increased in numbers without any introduced food and little plant matter.Most pest snails are hermaphroditic (for example, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, Bladder snails, Small Pond Snails, and Pond snails (read my guides about them)). It means that they have both male and female reproductive organs. It also means that one snail can be enough to start an infestation. There are lots of other types of fish that will eat snails. I simply do not like going that route because you have to introduce a new fish to your aquarium that you may not want in there. I am worried I have Planaria feeding on the detritus, and my ramshorn snails population was drastically reduced, however I did redecorate my plants and gotten rid of the bulkiness and favorable setting for snails to multiply, so I can’t tell if Planaria was the culprit.

It means that the number of snails is going to be dependent upon the food that they can find. Therefore, the main cause of snail overpopulation is overfeeding. Loaches (like Clown loaches, Zebra Botia, Macracantha Botia loaches) will go straight after the snails. Yoyo (or Pakistani) loach is a hit or miss. In some cases, they will erase all your snails, while in others they will not pay any attention to them.
