About this deal

Ordnance Survey 25-inch map, 1919: "District Council Offices" labelled on Park Road, immediately north-west of Hengoed station. Gelligaer Urban District was abolished in 1974. The Bedlinog ward became a community in Merthyr Tydfil, whilst the rest of the former urban district became a community called Gelligaer within Rhymney Valley District in the new county of Mid Glamorgan. [10] The community was divided in 1985, when separate communities were created for Bargoed and Darran Valley, the Pontlottyn area was transferred to the Rhymney community, and Ystrad Mynach (which had previously straddled the Gelligaer and Caerphilly communities) was united within Gelligaer. [11] [12] Further local government reorganisation in 1996 saw the abolition of Mid Glamorgan County Council, and Rhymney Valley merged with neighbouring Islwyn borough to become the Caerphilly County Borough. Mechanism: bypass (see FAQ at the bottom of this feature for the difference between bypass and anvil secateurs)

Gelligaer was an ancient parish in the county of Glamorgan. [4] It was included in the Merthyr Tydfil Poor Law Union from 1836. [5] When elected parish and district councils were established under the Local Government Act 1894, Gelligaer was given a parish council and included in the Gelligaer and Rugos (or Rhigos) Rural District, which covered the parts of the Merthyr Tydfil Poor Law Union within Glamorgan that did not have urban authorities. The rural district was disbanded in 1908, with the parish of Gelligaer being made an urban district on 11 September 1908. [6] It was created specifically as a result of the rapid population growth in the locality as a result of the expansion of the coal mining industry. According to gardening writer Anna Pavord, he approaches the subject “with the eye of an artist”, and as a result, his loppers – in particular these limited edition S-Type secateurs – are a work of art in themselves. The only reason the Okatsune pruners pipped them to the post here is because of the price: but really, I’d highly recommend both – it just comes down to aesthetics. How smoothly the contraption can be manoeuvred one-handed will impact the efficiency of your green-fingered endeavours. Just make sure you invest in a quality product – which means good, sharp steel. The sharper the blade, the stronger the cut and the less force is required, which makes it the gentler on the wrists, says topiary expert Darren Lerigo who runs the Modern Mint online tool and gardening shop. If the blades can be sharpened, all the better.

Gelligaer's New Urban Council. New Body Selected at the Poll". Weekly Mail. 3 October 1908. p.2 . Retrieved 23 September 2021. There are two tiers of local government covering Gelligaer, at community and county borough level: Gelligaer Community Council and Caerphilly County Borough Council. The community council is based at an office on Llwyn Onn in the Penpedairheol area of the community. [2] Caerphilly County Borough Council also has its main offices in the community of Gelligaer, being at Penallta House in the Tredomen area of Ystrad Mynach. [3] Planning application 5/5/83/0058: Use of buildings and land for residential purposes at Council Offices, Park Road, Hengoed, granted 7 March 1983 According to topiary expert Darren Lerigo, most gardeners will find bypass secateurs to be the better bet, because they make for a cleaner cut. How do I care for the blades of my secateurs? Gelli Gaer Urban District". A Vision of Britain through Time. GB Historical GIS / University of Portsmouth . Retrieved 15 October 2022.

Topiary expert Lerigo devoutly describes his chosen make of Japanese secateurs, Okatsune, as a bit of kit that Marie Kondo would approve of: simple, effective, and capable of sparking joy, time and time again. The Hitachi Yasugi high carbon steel of these Okatsune secateurs stands out, producing a clean, precise, efficient cut. Apparently, they’re made with “Izumo” iron sand, which was used in the manufacturing of ancient Japanese swords. Simple, sharp and strong, with a direct action, resulting in a very clean, efficient cut. The big chunky catch at the bottom has a crisp action that’s easy to use, even with cold wet hands or muddy gloves, and the spring is well secured and never accidentally pops out. Red and white handles? Red shows up in daylight, white at night, for all you nocturnal gardeners. Standard size fits most, while the small model is great for those with smaller hands or as a second pair and for flowers in the house etc. Large size have longer handles giving you more leverage. Tips

Sharpen with a whetstone. Leave the whetstone in water for about five minutes until soaked through, then gently rub a blade against it to sharpen. What do I do if the blades of my secateurs jam and the stems get caught between them? The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). Gelli Gaer Ancient Parish / Civil Parish". A Vision of Britain through Time. GB Historical GIS / University of Portsmouth . Retrieved 15 October 2022.The blade is ground at two angles, so it cuts through wood smoothly and does not damage the plant unnecessarily. Thanks to the unique shape of the hollow ground blade, the sap drains from the blade and the blade does not split. The V-shaped spring ensures that the cutting load is distributed evenly along the length of the spring, ensuring a smooth closing. Smooth blades all have their limits, says Jake Hobson. Steel is hard and sharp, but it can chip if abused. Try not to cut wire, metal, stone, plastic or any other hard material. Even bamboo fibres and some very hard woods, especially knots, burrs and dead wood, can damage steel edges.
