About this deal

A salad spoon will usually come as part of a set for serving salads, alongside a salad fork. A salad spoon will look a lot like a serving spoon but might be marginally smaller. A salad spoon is intended for both mixing salads and for serving salads. However, traditionalists will tell you that the last part of the risotto-making process is where the magic happens. That bit when you add the last sprinkle of grated parmesan and the final knob of butter. We’re using the classic Jamie Oliver risotto bianco recipe, to demonstrate the simple tips that will take your dish to the next level. Find the full recipe here.

Poole and The River Cafe also add tomatoes. Despite my initial commitment to keeping things as simple as possible, I am won over: they supply a fruity acidity that complements the wine and is less strident than Aikens’s lemon juice. I also fall, unexpectedly, for their dried red chilli – after all, Venice was on the ancient spice route, albeit long before chillies made it to the old world. Perhaps more historically accurate is Poole’s star anise, but my testers found it too strong – it is complex and interesting, but a bit distracting.

It is made of stainless steel and has a nice weight to it and, although the handle is short, it sits comfortably in your hand. But it is the spoon itself which gives the beauty – it has an elongated sensuous curve to it, and a generous surface area to scoop an exact portion of creamy risotto, perfectly cooked “all'onda”, like Delia’s classic risotto Milanese. I now find myself making excuses to cook risotto all the time for the sheer pleasure of using it. You’ll find ice-cream scoops from OXO Good Grips – they’ve got a trigger no less! We’ve got stainless steel falafel scoops from Prue’s World (thank you Prue!). And you’ll even find batter scoops and double-headed melon ballers to create two different sizes of melon balls. Nice. As each piece is made from a single piece of wood, patterns will vary. Hand wash only and occasionally coat with olive oil to prevent drying out. This list details some of the most popular and also the lesser used spoons that are around today. Tablespoon

This stage is called the ‘mantecare.’ The mantecare is a whisking process, where the butter and cheese are stirred vigorously into the rice. The fats from the butter and cheese blend with the starch from the rice to create the perfect creamy texture. Key tips for the perfect risotto Cooking times vary according to the type of rice, but generally, it will take at least 15-18 minutes. Once ready, the rice should be removed from the heat and stirred with a knob of cold butter and parmesan cheese. This is considered the ‘ mantecatura’ phase, an Italian word referring to the process of ‘ creaming’ butter and cheese with the risotto in this case. How to prepare risotto ahead of time Surprisingly, given how vehemently many observers object to the addition of cream (“ Sacrilege! Blasphemy!”), several risotto recipes in The Silver Spoon include it. Authentic or not, HTE believes that a risotto’s creaminess should be achieved via starch, butter and cheese, not the addition of cream, mascarpone or a soft goat’s cheese, all of which can easily mask flavours and turn this into a heavy, overly rich, one-note dish. The first fundamental step in making risotto is toasting the rice, which serves to make the grain more compact to prevent it from breaking as it cooks. Heat a large saucepan and pour in all the rice. Continue stirring the rice with a wooden spoon and toast it for a few minutes. You’ll know it’s ready by touching it with your fingers and smelling it; the rice must be very hot and give off the scent of the grain. You can also toast the risotto with another fat like a sautéed onion (or shallot) and butter (or oil). Once toasted, add a glass of wine and let it evaporate for extra flavor. How to make risotto: cooking and ‘ mantecatura’ A baby spoon is a small spoon that is used for feeding babies, or the baby may use it to practice feeding themselves. These spoons are usually made from food-grade plastic or rubber so that they are soft if the baby catches it on their gums or lips.

Never wash your rice beforehand as this removes the starch, which is what helps give risotto its smooth texture. An iced tea spoon has a bowl that is pretty much identical to a teaspoon. The only difference between an an iced tea spoon and a teaspoon is that an iced tea spoon will have a handle that is almost double the length. These are used in iced tea pitchers to stir around the lemon and ice, to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed throughout the drink, and also to mix around the sugar and encourage it to dissolve.

This risotto spoon has a hole in the centre which increases the surface area of the spoon. By allowing grains to pass through, the risotto can be stirred faster to create the smoothest texture towards the end of cooking. Olive wood has a high oil content which makes it extra-resistant to bacteria - ideal for cooking utensils. Caprese salad – simple yet divine, this three-ingredient salad shows you that simplicity can indeed be blissfulLet's start with the selection of rice. There are many varieties and some are more suitable than others for preparing risotto. Depending on the shape of the grain and the way it is cooked, the rice is divided into common, semi-fine, fine and superfine. The last two sets are characterized by larger and tapered grains (and a better hold in cooking) because they cook more slowly and remain more al dente, so they are ideal for cooking risotto. Arborio and Carnaroli rice are considered the best varieties. Then there’s also Vialone Nano, a good alternative to Carnaroli. And Volano, Roma, Baldo, Sant'Andrea… How to toast the rice for risotto
