About this deal

Nematodes can also be safely applied in combination with soil borne predatory mites. For More Information On Fungus Gnats Read ' A Gardener's Guide To Biological Control' Sciarid Fly thrive in warm moist conditions and are a particular problem where greenhouse hygiene may have been overlooked. Water at the beginning of the day and try to avoid excessive wetness at the end of the day and always sweep up excess compost and plant debris, ensuring the growing bench is as clean as possible all of the time. How to get rid of Sciarid Fly The nematodes will not harm plant leaves but wash them off into the soil, where they can control the sciarid fly. Killing fungus gnats off for good is difficult since each female lays around 150 eggs in their short lifetime. Fungus gnat numbers grow exponentially, and once set in can be hard to eradicate completely. Traps They can be found hovering around your plant, or crawling over them. Indoors, you will notice a gnat slowly flying around the room. They’re attracted to light, as well as heat and scent. For this reason they may seem attracted to you as well.

Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Sciarid Zoot Off Granules – Stop Sciarid Flies laying their eggs in your pots / containers / seed trays by adding a layer of Sciarid Zoot Off to the surface of your compost – layer should be at least 1cm deep. It can be spread around established plants or applied after seeds have been sown and the seedlings will germinate through the dressing. This new granular product is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried left-overs from making organic olive oil) with an added volcanic mineral. Sciarid Zoot Off is made out of natural / non-toxic ingredients, is attractive in appearance, fragrant, biodegradable, safe to use and is totally safe for pets and wildlife. Available in 1.7kg bags, each bag will cover 1.2 sqm. How it works :- There are thousands of different Scaridae species, but they look broadly similar and it’s nearly impossible to see the above detail with the human eye. Welcome to our new House Plant Pest Series where we will release a number of dedicated blogs on common house plant pests throughout the year. The first issue regards Fungus Flies, a pest that is currently highly prevalent in homes across the U.K.Cutworms - Cutworms are soil-dwelling caterpillars of several species of moth. In June and July the moths lay eggs in batches of 30-50 on leaves and stems. The emerging caterpillars are up to 40mm long and are often creamy-brown, greenish-brown or greyish-white in colour. They feed on many vegetables, fruit and ornamental plants and, after a couple of months, pupate in the soil. A second generation hatches out in August or September to feed, and to overwinter when the weather gets colder. Pour and apply the solution into the Houseplant pots, seed trays, or containers, directly into the growing media / compost, using all the solution between the treated pots. Start your slug control early and apply at least a week before planting to ensure your garden is safe from slugs. Apply your Fungus Fly Killer Nematodes when damage to plants is observed or when Fungus Fly activity has been observed. Fungus Fly can occur all year round and can be treated at any time they occur. How Many Nematodes Do I Need?

Add 0.5L of the nematode concentrate to a w atering can or sprayer (hand held sprayers should suffice, with filters removed, or use our specific nematode applicator, the Nema Super Sprayer, for optimum nematode application) with up to 8L of water. The removal of peat composts to more organic based composts has been a positive move for the environment, but the new organic based composts do also attract more Fungus Fly, which enjoy feeding on organic matter. This has led to a general increase in the activity of this particular pests for many people growing house plants. Fungus gnats are actually attracted to soil, rather than plants, so they can infect all plant types. Using neem oil to kill gnats is a popular ‘natural’ method in the US, where it is approved. However, neem oil isn’t currently approved for use in the UK. Natural enemies of Fungus Fly can be used to control the larval stage of its life cycle. By killing the larvae of the fly, the life cycle of the pest is broken and as such no more adult flies will appear. The best way to accomplish this is with the use of the nematodes contained within our Fungus Fly Killer. The predators need moist growing media, soil or substrate and temperatures above 15°C. They are supplied in tubs with a peat and vermiculite carrier for sprinkling onto pots, trays, benches and floors. They are very active and can be seen running on the growing media surface or under pots and trays. Both species will also eat other prey in the growing media , such as thrips larvae and pupae and are generally regarded by growers as also giving some reduction of shore flies. However, Machrocheles robustulus is not recommended for shore fly control. Forms a physical barrier between the adult sciarid flies and the compost so they are unable to lay their eggs. Fungus Fly Killer contains Steinernema feltiae nematodes for the effective biological control of Fungus / Sciarid Fly. The nematodes enter the larvae via a natural opening, like the mouth, and feed on the contents of the larvae. A natural bacterium is produced by the nematodes inside the larvae, which kills it. Infected larvae will be completely broken down by the nematodes. The nematodes also reproduce inside the larvae, releasing more nematodes into the surrounding area. When Should I Apply The Nematodes? Cultural control is the basis of any effective integrated pest management (IPM) programme for both sciarid and shore flies. Sciarid fly larvae thrive in moist growing media and infected root ti ssue. Therefore g ood nursery hygiene, keeping benches, floors and irrigation equipment clean, remov ing heavily infested and diseased plant material, avoiding over-watering and giving adequate ventilation to crops are key cultural control methods . Fungus Fly are primarily a nuisance pest but can damage plants if allowed to build up in large numbers. The larvae of the flies sit in compost, or soil, and feed on plant roots. This can weaken plants and, in severe cases, kill young plants. Fungus Fly can also spread a number of plant diseases.

Adult fungus gnats only live on liquids, and don’t actually do any damage to plants. Their presence is just very irritating. Fungus gnats (or sciarid flies) are the little flying bugs around your plant. They look like small, pale flies with translucent wings that are slow fliers and don’t make an audible buzzing sound.Nematodes are microscopic worms that are natural predators of fungus gnats. They come in a powder form which you simply mix with water and add to the soil around your plant using a watering can. St ratiolaelaps scimitus ( Hypoaspis miles) and Macrocheles robustulus are ground-dwelling predatory mites commonly used for sciarid fly control and can be very effective. Adult females of both species are up to 0.8 mm long, off-white , with a pale brown shield covering most of the upper surface of the body.
