Despite the cheerfulness of the Trolls (except Branch) and its brightly colored world, the setting of the story, details such as the Cookin' With Trolls book indicate a more darker theme, and the story implies has a much more sinister undertone about a great horror dealt towards the Trolls by the Bergens as a result of their desire to be happy once a year.
