It’s an incredibly exciting time to be a Warhammer hobbyist – the Citadel Colour range is expanding with 25 vivid and versatile new Contrast paints, the Shade range has been reformulated with a further seven new colours added, and a brand new bright white spray primer is coming! It’s a chromatic Christmas, and it’s still summer! Blue Malayan Coral Snake : The effect on the body was achieved by using thinned Frostheart Contrast with a White Scar drybrush, wet blending with Blood Angels Red Contrast for the head and tail. Scales are Leviadon Blue with a Blue Horror drybrush.

Eyes are basecoated White Scar . Wash with Hexwraith Flame mixed with a bit of Yellow Fluorescent . This can flow onto the lids for a glow effect. Establish a centre dot of white, then glaze with Yellow Fluorescent Genestealer Purple: Purple is a complementary color to pink, which means they pair well together. Genestealer Purple is a dark, rich purple that can be used as a shadow or to create a gradient effect with Volupus Pink. A new alternative to Volupus Pink , Doomfire Magenta is lighter and brighter, opening up new avenues for painting pinkish tones.I love using them as base colours for large armies and glazing over layers on highly detailed miniatures for extra colour saturation. The expansion of the Contrast range with new colours gives hobbyists an amazing opportunity to try different things! There’s a lot of green in Warhammer, from Salamanders and Nurgle Daemons, to Orks and orruks! Gutrippa Flesh is here to help, slotting in between Militarum Green and Plaguebearer Flesh . I envision the forces from my Tyranid splinter fleet absorbing bio-mass, adapting themselves to the warzone and changing their colours to match the environment. To this end I opted for a very ‘naturalistic’ scheme reminiscent of many insects and arachnids in our world – namely earthy tones with a lighter underbody and darker areas on any hard plates and carapaces.

Emma: Baal Red is a pure, bright red. It’s versatile and easy to blend with other Contrast paints like Magmadroth Flame. I have used it for gemstones, armour plates on Orks , and plasma effects on Chaos Space Marine weapons.

Lizzie: As majestic as Sigvald himself, this is a really vibrant colour that shades and highlights effortlessly. Naturally, I’ve tried this on the Prince himself and I can confirm – he heartily approves. Sitting next to Volupus Pink, but even richer, this colour comes close to the intensity of Screamer Pink, but with the unique flow of contrast. When it comes to Warhammer, you’ll most often find tentacles on models related to Nurgle, whether in Age of Sigmar or Warhammer 40,000, though Tyranids frequently sport them as well. Imperial Fist takes up the gauntlet thrown down by Nazdreg Yellow and Iyanden Yellow, pushing the pigment further and making yellow even more of a breeze to paint. A lot of these same schemes and colors can be used across the rest of the Saurus and even the Skinks. I plan on doing a slightly lighter version of this for my own Skinks.

Add Shyish Purple to the very deepest skin recesses, particularly where the under shade is strong, such as feet. I actually mixed in Druchii Violet to Volupus Pink in lieu of not having Shyish Purple !Lizzie: What a name! Perfect on Daemonettes and other Daemons of Slaanesh – you can apply this over a light skin tone to create gaunt and sunken flesh. It’s also fun to use over metallics to create a really unique tone.

Few things make for scarier monsters than writhing masses of tentacles. Whether featured in gaping maws or hanging off the face of an eldritch horrorterror beyond all rational comprehension, tentacles are a great way to make a model look immediately gross and scary. They’re also great for adding a splash of color to models that might otherwise be dark and relatively monochrome. For their carapaces I used Karandras Green and applied Doomfire Magenta to their fleshier parts, while claws were painted with Blood Angels Red and the visible brain-like parts had Frostheart applied to them. I went old school on the basing and used a layer of Armageddon Dust which was then painted over with Warboss Green , washed in Biel-Tan Green and drybrushed with Niblet Green. Charlie: Custom Splinter FleetThe last time I painted a Tyranid model for my custom hive fleet was pre-Contrast paint, so it was nice to try out the new colours and find some much faster ways to get to a good result (shout-out to Striking Scorpion Green for that vivid tropical emerald). Contrast paints and Tyranids are such a perfect match. Darcy: Termagant Experiments Lizzie: Contrast paints are an incredible tool for any painter. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced hobbyist, these paints are easy to use and highly versatile – allowing you to create a number of fantastic effects. That’s it, your Saurus is done! If your shield has areas that you want to make stone, like I did on mine, just follow the same steps from the stone weapon. Emma: Regally vibrant, Luxion Purple keeps a bright tone even in the darker areas of your miniatures – great for Hedonites of Slaanesh and the Emperor’s Children . This is my favourite purple Contrast of all time! Emma: Gutrippa Flesh is terrific and will save a lot of time when painting Kruleboyz or Gretchin as it gives an excellent base colour and shade that suits these boyz down to the ground. It’s really great for camo cloth too!
