If your mate was hitting good yields with 16 x 6.5L then that is 104L total so divide that by 4 (4 plants instead of 16) and you get 26L so I would suggest starting with a 25L pot and if he falls short go to 30L (doubtful though) or if he feels he is wasting soil after a grow move down to 20L.
