About this deal

Clynelish 24 yo 1995/2019 (49.6%, The Whisky Cask Company, sherry butt, cask #8655, 590 bottles) - 021220

Clynelish 10 yo 2010/2020 (55.3%, The Single Malts of Scotland for LMDW, bourbon barrel, cask #700045, 238 bottles) - 011220 Where does Clynelish’ waxiness come from? Well, there’s actually a pretty in-depth explanation in a book called Whisky Opus by Gavin D. Smith and Dominic Roskrow.

Clynelish 10 yo 2008/2018 (46%, Signatory for Flanders’ Finest Cask Selection, bourbon barrel, cask #800120, 304 bottles) - by Angus - 290918 Lasts for medium length in the mouth. Bitter oak. Spices. Turning to sweet malt and sugars. Pleasant burn with no water. With a little water, it opens up to a smoother, sweeter disposition. I like it hot and tart without water. Mouth: feels fuller than 46%, but slightly less complex than the nose. A nice waxy / creamy texture, mixed with nutty notes, briney touches and a sweet toffee edge. Orchard fruits and lemons. Orange peel. Light herbal honey, oak spice and leather. A hint of buttery cocoa as well.

In these days of insane inflation and rising prices our cynicism is fuelled daily by news of something else creeping out of our reach. Recently Diageo, the owner of this particular release, has been one of the most clumsy. Wild rumours of horrific increases on their Talisker and Lagavulin official releases were widely spread over winter and while, at the point of writing, this remains to be realised on the shelf, it has been confirmed through retailers that it’s coming. This level of price hike, in any context, is putridly cynical and unjustifiable. Clynelish 35 yo 1983/2018 (52.2%, OB, Casks of Distinction, for Aaron Chan, hogshead, cask #2566, 144 bottles) - 140219 Palate: This did NOT disappoint! What a palate. More of that grass, barley, orchard fruits like pear, with some peppery heat at the end. That dance that those sweet fruity notes and peppery spices are playing is really, really enjoyable. This bugger was only an 8 dollar dram? Money well spent.

So here you go, I bought a bottle with the sole purpose of giving this Highlands single malt the place it deserves. It should have been part of the Classic Malts of Scotland in my opinion. Taste: sweet greeting at first, some peat, grapes, a little peach flavour, strong barley malt, a little chestnutty, with a moderate to heavy body, which I like. The palate is medium-bodied and creamy. Honey and vanilla again make an appearance though rather subdued. In addition there now are oranges and a gentle touch of smoke, reminiscent of bonfire smoke. This is a great mouthfeel, almost perfectly rounded.

The nose is complex, lightly salted with dry pineapple, a smoky touch and rather flowery. The light peat is upholstered with vanilla and toffee. Lightly peppered and dry. Wonderful perfume, subtle and inviting. Clynelish 1997/2013 (46%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseurs Choice, refill sherry hogsheads) - 051115 Distilled in Sutherland 24 yo 1996/2020 (47.2%, Thompson Bros, refill hogshead, 300 bottles) - 021220 The nose is a blast of sal and citrus with floral and woody notes. Very mouth watering. Very. There's something that reminds me of a freshly sharpend pencil. Pretty estery, but all very balanced and mellow.
